Part-Time Literacy Teacher Job Description Essential Job Functions

Responsibilities of an After-School Literacy Teacher include, but are not limited to:

  • Implement literacy curriculum and activities.
  • Develop engaging lesson plans aligned to specific learning objectives.
  • Deliver engaging and rigorous lesson plans that appeal to all learners.
  • Use formal assessment data to inform planning and delivery of lessons.
  • Create a positive, achievement-oriented, engaging, and structured environment that excites and invests children.
  • Motivate children to realize academic growth and character development.
  • Communicate effectively with students, families, and Urban Promise staff.
  • Meet regularly with the Literacy Facilitator to establish goals, measure effectiveness, and work to continually improve programs.
Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in any field of study
  • Valid North Carolina teaching certification preferred
Skills and Characteristics:
  • Strong belief in the Urban Promise mission and model
  • High level of personal organization
  • Passion and love for working with young children
  • Proven track-record of high achievement in a classroom setting
  • Experience utilizing and implementing data-driven instruction
  • Passion for affecting social, economic, and spiritual change in low-income communities
  • Team player: maturity, humility, strong work-ethic, sense of humor, and a willingness to respond positively to feedback
Work Experience:
  • At least two years of teaching experience (preferably in a Title 1 school) is preferred
  • Time:
    Mondays and Tuesdays from 4:00 - 6:00 PM beginning September 22, 2026 and ending May 11, 2027
  • Location:
  • Pay: $30 per hour
  • This is a part-time position that will not be eligible for benefits.
