Position Overview
The Hawbridge School is seeking a 7th/8th Grade English Language Arts Teacher who can create an engaging, supportive classroom where students grow as readers, writers, thinkers, and community members.
The ideal candidate values strong relationships, meaningful learning experiences, and collaboration. This teacher will incorporate Hawbridge's commitment to place-based education and restorative practices while providing high-quality, standards-aligned ELA instruction.
Key Responsibilities- Plan and teach engaging ELA lessons aligned with North Carolina standards.
- Support students in developing strong reading, writing, communication, and critical-thinking skills.
- Differentiate instruction to meet a range of student needs.
- Collaborate with EC staff to support students in inclusion classes and implement student accommodations and services.
- Use student work and assessment data to guide instruction and provide additional support when needed.
- Maintain accurate grades and communicate regularly with students and families.
- Collaborate with colleagues and participate in school wide activities and professional learning.
Bridge and Advisory are held daily and are an important part of Hawbridge's instructional day. Teachers are expected to actively facilitate these periods and use the time to support students academically and socially.
Bridge and Advisory may include- Academic support, intervention, and enrichment.
- Organization, goal-setting, and progress monitoring.
- Relationship and community building.
- Restorative circles and conversations.
- School wide lessons, activities, and student support.
- Helping students develop responsibility, independence, and a sense of belonging.
Hawbridge believes learning should connect students to the world around them. Teachers are encouraged to use Saxapahaw, the Haw River, the local community, outdoor spaces, and real-world experiences to make learning meaningful. In ELA, this may include local texts, research, writing projects, community partnerships, or interdisciplinary experiences.
Restorative PracticesHawbridge uses restorative practices to build relationships, strengthen community, and promote student accountability. Teachers are expected to:
- Build positive and respectful relationships with students.
- Establish clear and consistent classroom expectations.
- Use restorative conversations, reflection, and community-building practices.
- Help students address conflict, take responsibility, and repair harm when appropriate.

Schedule may be adjusted based on student and school needs.
Qualifications- Bachelor's degree required.
- Appropriate NC teaching license preferred or willingness to pursue licensure.
- Strong understanding of middle school ELA instruction.
- Ability to support students with a variety of academic and learning needs.
- Strong communication, organization, and classroom management skills.
- Commitment to relationship-centered teaching, restorative practices, inclusion, and place-based education.
