Overview
Summary This is an early career role. Travel required between NC, SC, VA. This role supports substation and distribution operations under direct supervision. It is designed for candidates who are early in their electrical or mechanical career path and are eager to learn utility scale power systems. The ideal candidate is mechanically inclined, safety minded, and willing to develop a strong understanding of electrical theory, medium/high voltage equipment, and industry standards (IEC, IEEE, ANSI/NETA).
Comprehensive on the job training will be provided.
Initially performed under supervision; responsibilities expand with demonstrated proficiency.
- Assist with installation, inspection, and basic testing of medium voltage power cables.
- Support troubleshooting efforts for overhead distribution and substation equipment.
- Participate in scheduled substation inspections (biannual/annual).
- Assist with switching and grounding procedures following established safety protocols.
- Learn to operate specialized test equipment (megohmmeters, micro ohmmeters, voltmeters).
- Support acceptance testing, commissioning, and preventative maintenance activities.
- Help perform transformer inspections and basic repair tasks.
- Document field notes, measurements, and inspection results accurately.
- Maintain tools, vehicles, and work areas in safe operating condition.
- Follow all safety and compliance requirements related to medium and high voltage systems.
Required
- High School Diploma or GED
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude or electrical interest (trade classes, shop experience, military experience, etc.)
- Basic understanding of electrical concepts (Ohm’s law, AC/DC, circuits)
Preferred but NOT Required
- Associate degree in Industrial Maintenance, Electrical/Electronic Technology, or related field
- Internship, co-op, or limited experience with electrical, industrial, or utility work
- Hands on experience with tools, equipment, or mechanical systems
Note:
This is an early career role. Training will be provided; candidates with no utility experience are encouraged to apply.
- Ability to pass a pre-employment DOT drug screen and physical
- Work is performed at remote locations and on active generation/construction sites
- Ability to climb, lift 50+ lbs, and work outdoors in varying weather
- Willingness to work around energized electrical equipment following strict safety protocols
