Job SummaryThis position administers the City of Charlotte’s Flow Free Program. The program ensures compliance of local businesses with the City of Charlotte’s Sewer Use Ordinance and Grease Trap Policy. Work involves inspecting grease interceptors and traps for commercial businesses such as restaurants, hotels, and daycare centers, collecting raw sewage and grease samples, conducting investigations with other divisions and agencies, informing customers of policy and requirements, and delivering educational outreach presentations and seminars to large and small groups such as association meetings, festivals, and schools.
EssentialJob Functions
- Ensures compliance of local businesses/industries with the City of Charlotte’s Sewer Use Ordinance and Grease Trap Policy.
- Inspects restaurants, hotels, daycare centers, and other customer facilities and sewer connections.
- Enters data into tracking spreadsheets.
- Investigates sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs) or other irregular discharges.
- Researches historical data on collection system, restaurants, or spills.
- Updates database information; completes paperwork; and creates inspection reports.
- Conducts enforcement actions in accordance with the Sewer Use Ordinance and Enforcement Response Plan.
- Assists other areas of Charlotte Water.
- Conducts educational outreach presentations and seminars.
- Performs other related job duties as assigned.
- Serves in a rotational on‑call status.
- High School Diploma.
- Two‑ or four‑year degree with courses in sciences a plus.
- Two (2) years of related work experience.
- Must be able to lift and carry at least 60 pounds and walk sewer lines over rough, uneven terrain. Some bending, stooping, lifting required.
- Requires a valid driver’s license.
- Must obtain and maintain a City Driver’s Permit.
- Water and wastewater certifications a plus.
- Industrial Pretreatment Program Specialist Certification a plus.
Skills And Abilities
- Knowledge of plumbing and mechanical/industrial plant processes.
- Knowledge of common computer software such as Microsoft Office Suite.
- Skill in communicating, both verbally and in writing.
- Skill in speaking Spanish (a plus).
- Ability to obtain a City driving permit.
- Ability to observe details.
- Ability to collect wastewater samples.
The work is medium effort and requires applying 30 pounds of force frequently and exerting up to 75 pounds of force occasionally to move objects. Additionally, balancing, climbing, crouching, manual dexterity, grasping, handling, perceiving sounds at normal speaking levels, distinguishing among sounds, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, and visual acuity in data/color/observations/equipment inspections, and walking are required.

The environment may periodically have unexpected requirements or demands, including working in various weather conditions, on‑call attendance, and working after hours, evenings, nights, weekends, and/or holidays.
