Job Description

WSP is looking for an Intermediate Traffic Design Engineer for its North Carolina Traffic practice. The role can be based in the Charlotte or Raleigh office.

Opportunity

Candidate will develop design plans using Open Road Designer, Micro Station Geo Pak, or Auto Cad for transportation or electrical systems, including traffic signals, communications, ITS, lighting, or roadway systems. Field analysis of traffic systems, signal timing, pavement marking, and photometric lighting analysis may also be required.

Your Impact
  • Collect, compile, and analyze data from the site, surveys, blueprints, GIS data, and other sources.
  • Perform professional traffic engineering work and conduct investigations and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, roadways, intersections, signage, signals, pavement markings, and transportation corridors to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, and permits.
  • Develop and design innovative concepts for strategic intersection and corridor improvements that require coordination with authorities, sub‑consultants, and clients.
  • Design traffic signals and communication networks to facilitate real‑time corridor operations.
  • Develop or incorporate concept development, design requirements, and operating strategies to account for safety and functionality of end‑users, vehicles, and future‑ready solutions with traffic engineering standards.
  • Work individually or as part of a cross‑functional team of engineers, planners, and scientific professionals to execute project work on multiple concurrent projects, assist with roadways layout, establish reference points/elevations/grades, calculate costs, quantities, and ensure compliance with specifications, permits, and regulatory analysis.
  • Verify site characteristics and provide technical assistance on signal system design, monitoring, and control to ensure safe and efficient roadway design.
  • Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate measurements, statistical analysis, and reporting.
  • Assist with development and scoping of medium‑sized projects.
  • Comply with regulatory data integrity, documentation, training, monitoring, and record retention requirements.
  • Interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients in a professional manner.
  • Remain current with the latest traffic engineering techniques and practices.
  • Collaborate with other engineers, planners, scientists, and DOT authorities on federally, state, regional, and locally funded road and transportation projects.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Electrical Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • 1 to 3 years of post‑education experience in engineering and technical design.
  • Engineer in Training Certification or ability to acquire within 6 months.
  • Prior demonstrated knowledge of DOT advisory circulars and procedures.
  • Ability to make technical computations and calculations using engineering principles, plans and specifications, and factual comparisons to regulations.
  • Ability to plan and conduct inspections and investigations on transportation corridor construction and design, applying applicable regulations and policies.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas professionally to engineering and non‑engineering audiences.
  • Highly capable self‑leadership with attention to detail, multi‑tasking, and prioritization in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently and provide guidance to junior team members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
  • Developed critical thinking and problem‑solving skills to apply technical knowledge to testing results, data collation, and statistical analysis for the most effective solution.
  • Ability to assertively direct subcontractors and others to complete tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and abiding by WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.
