The Senior Packaging Application Center Design Engineer plays a critical role in supporting Sealed Air's Sales organization by designing, testing, and validating custom protective packaging solutions for customers across the United States. This role blends advanced CAD design, hands‑on prototyping and testing, and customer‑facing technical collaboration.
Engineers in this role work independently and collaboratively to solve complex packaging challenges across multiple materials and industries, delivering rapid, high‑quality design and testing support to sales account managers and customers. This role is located in our Charlotte, NC office on a hybrid schedule coming in Monday through Thursday with flexibility to work remote Friday.
Key Responsibilities- Design custom protective packaging solutions using 3D CAD software (primarily Rhino; Solid Works, Inventor, etc).
- Develop custom cushion and mold designs for Instapak foam solutions
- Design and sample custom Korrvu designs
- Receive, evaluate, and handle customer products, then develop packaging concepts, prototypes, and test plans.
- Conduct physical testing (drop, vibration, compression, and other ISTA related protocols) to validate packaging performance.
- Analyze test results, identify root causes of damage or performance gaps, and recommend optimized solutions.
- Collaborate directly with sales account managers to understand customer needs, project scope, and performance requirements.
- Travel 2-3 days per month on average supporting customers across the United States, conduct onsite evaluations, or support field testing.
- Design across multiple material types, including corrugated, polyurethane foam, and other protective packaging formats.
- Communicate design intent, test results, and recommendations clearly to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
- Balance independent design work with team collaboration in a fast‑paced, high‑volume environment.
- Program and operate CNC router equipment to machine mold components
- Build molds and wooden frames using woodworking tools (table saw, band saw, nail guns, screw guns)
- Pour Instapak foam into molds to create prototype cushions
- Bachelor's Degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Industrial Design degree.
- 3+ years of experience in packaging engineering or a closely related field.
- Protective packaging experience focused on damage reduction.
- Corrugated packaging experience with demonstrated ability to design protective structures.
- 3D CAD proficiency
- Rhino, Solid Works, Inventor, etc. - Ability to lift 30 pounds for handling customer products and test samples.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, especially with sales account managers.
- Ability to work independently while contributing to a highly collaborative team environment.
- Travel 2-3 days per month on average, as needed.
- Polyurethane foam design experience (highly valued, though less common).
- ISTA certification or ISTA membership/affiliation.
- Experience with drop testing, vibration testing, or other dynamics testing protocols.
