Roadway Design Engineer

Opportunity

WSP is currently searching for a Roadway Design Engineer for the North Carolina Transportation Team in the Greensboro, NC office. Candidates may also be based in our Charlotte, Raleigh, or Mooresville, NC offices.

The successful candidate should have experience in civil/roadway design and plans production for traditional delivery and/or alternative delivery projects. They will work alongside transportation experts leading innovative projects in North Carolina, the Southeast Region, and beyond.

• Work on project tasks for conceptual and preliminary engineering and final design activities, as well as development of construction plans, calculations and specifications.
• Collaborate with a multi-discipline team of engineers to execute project work on multiple concurrent projects.
• Participate hands‑on in the preparation of Plans, Specifications and Estimates (PS&E).
• Review, monitor and/or develop design layouts, sketches, plans, specifications and estimate standards and guidelines, correspondence, and prepare reports.
• Assist project managers and task leads with proactive project coordination and collaboration efforts, including coordination with owners, other disciplines, sub‑consultants, and clients.
• Apply high‑level civil engineering techniques and processes to identify improvements for various infrastructure project phases including concept development, preliminary design, final design, procurement, construction, and operation.
• Collaborate with professionals, other engineers, planners, and infrastructure authorities on federal, state, regional, and locally funded projects, as well as proposal and business development opportunities.
• Remain current in latest civil engineering techniques and practices.
• Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

• Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or a closely related discipline.
• 3-5 years of relevant post‑education experience in engineering and civil/roadway design.
• Engineer in Training Certification or ability to obtain Professional Engineering License in NC.
• Experience on DOT and municipal projects (highway, roadway geometric design and calculations, and roadway plan production).
• Proficiency in Micro Station and Open Roads Designer/Geopak roadway design software.
• Developing skills in project and staff management experience on civil transportation projects.
• Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non‑engineering audience.
• Demonstrated high‑level of self‑leadership with attention to detail, multi‑tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
• Works independently with minimal oversight and provides guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
• Commitment to upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
• Flexible to meet a variety of schedules to meet business needs and able to prioritize responsibilities and quickly adapt to change in a pressure work environment.

• Design experience on small to mid‑size projects.
• Experience with Open Roads Designer.
