Job Title: Senior Piping Designer

Location: 100% onsite at our client's design facility in Charlotte, NC 28273

Type: 6-month contract with possibility of extension or conversion to a permanent full‑time position

Compensation: $50.00 - $70.00/hr salary will be commensurate with experience.

Hours: 40 hours/week

Weekly pay

Overview

System One is seeking a Senior Piping Designer with strong plant layout experience, preferably within the power generation industry, to join our client's Charlotte design team. This role serves as a technical leader responsible for plant layout development, design execution, and coordination across multidisciplinary project teams. The Senior Piping Designer plays a critical role in ensuring constructible, code‑compliant, and efficient plant layouts for large‑scale power, energy, and industrial projects, while mentoring designers and supporting project delivery objectives.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and execute plant layout design activities, ensuring constructability, safety, maintainability, and compliance with applicable codes and standards.
  • Support the Department Manager with technical execution, staff oversight, schedule adherence, budget awareness, and quality control related to piping design and layout.
  • Support the Department Manager with development and review of project proposal packages.
  • Direct and coordinate the work of piping designers, drafters, and support personnel in planning, layout development, and production of construction deliverables.
  • Develop, review, and approve general arrangement drawings.
  • Develop, review, and approve piping plans, piping arrangements, sections, isometrics, and 3D models.
  • Manage and complete all piping design deliverables, including layout drawings, construction drawings, material take‑offs, and bills of materials.
  • Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and training to designers, checkers, and drafters, particularly with respect to piping layout best practices and power plant applications.
  • Under the direction of the Group Supervisor, manage a defined scope of work or piping area on large, complex projects.
  • Coordinate with process, mechanical, structural, electrical, and construction teams to resolve interface and layout challenges.
  • Interface with clients, vendors, and construction personnel to ensure project requirements and layout expectations are clearly understood and incorporated.
  • Review vendor and shop drawings for compliance with project requirements and piping layout intent.
  • Maintain engineering document indexes and piping progress reports.
  • Assist with estimating piping design effort, schedules, and manpower requirements.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support project and departmental goals.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or Associate Degree with relevant drafting and design coursework.
  • 12+ years of piping design and layout experience, preferably supporting power generation projects (combined cycle, simple cycle, thermal, or utility‑scale facilities).
  • Proven expertise in piping layout development for complex industrial facilities.
  • Strong understanding of piping codes, standards, and industry best practices.
  • Advanced CAD experience using AutoCAD, Micro Station, or Revit, with willingness to adapt to additional platforms.
  • Experience with Plant 3D and/or AVEVA E3D strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency with Navisworks, and Microsoft Office tools.
  • Ability to lead and mentor design teams while producing high‑quality, constructible layouts.
  • Strong organization, communication, problem‑solving, and time‑management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast‑paced design environment.
  • Certificate in Design/Drafting.
  • Direct experience with power plant piping layout, including turbine buildings, HRSGs, balance‑of‑plant systems, or utilities.
