Position: Senior Control Systems Engineer (Industrial/Water)

Company Overview

HDR's Building Engineering Services Group designs critical infrastructure for the digital age, including data centers, commercial environments, and sustainable facilities. The Senior Control Systems Engineer will lead the planning, design, and implementation of automated industrial control systems across various sectors.

Responsibilities
  • Travel to client facilities to assess and document existing control systems.
  • Participate in and lead design review and planning meetings with the client.
  • Develop preliminary engineering reports and studies for control system improvements.
  • Serve as Engineer of Record responsible for biddable and technically accurate construction documents.
  • Coordinate with project manager and section manager to update work plans, track budget and schedule performance.
  • Interface with Electrical, Process, and Cybersecurity specialists to coordinate design requirements.
  • Participate in scoping and proposal development with clients and marketing staff.
  • Plan and specify applied technology solutions, including instrumentation, control, AI, networking, data management, augmented reality, and vision control.
  • Lead selection and specification of facility and process instrumentation, control panels, and network equipment.
  • Develop control system construction documents such as P&IDs, process flow diagrams, network architecture diagrams, control panel layouts, wiring diagrams, and technical specifications.
  • Provide Quality Control reviews of control system designs.
  • Participate in system testing and commissioning activities.
  • Contribute to the Control System Technical Leadership Team and drive corporate initiatives for quality and strategic growth.
  • Engage in industry professional societies, develop standards, present at trade shows, and produce industry content.
  • Train and develop to become a subject matter expert and mentor junior staff.
  • Develop skills to serve as Design Manager or Project Manager for mid‑scale or large‑scale projects.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years applicable experience.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Demonstrated leadership and project management skills.
  • Automation programming experience.
  • Experience managing control systems projects.
  • Knowledge of automation hardware (Allen‑Bradley, Emerson, Foxboro, Modicon, Siemens, GE).
  • Knowledge of automation software (Wonderware, iFix, Factory Talk, VTScada, Ignition).
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and documentation skills.
  • Commitment to employee‑owned culture.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Network design experience for industrial control or SCADA systems.
  • Remote site telemetry communications knowledge.
  • Cybersecurity considerations for industrial control or SCADA.
  • Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) programming and configuration.
  • Distributed Control System (DCS) programming and configuration.
  • SCADA HMI programming and configuration.
  • Data management and analytics experience.
  • Artificial intelligence experience.
  • Manufacturing execution systems (MES) experience.
  • Water/wastewater experience.
  • Experience in food & beverage, general industrial, mining, manufacturing, or logistics.
  • Local candidates are preferred.
Location & Schedule

Primary location:
United States, North Carolina, Charlotte. Full‑time, Regular employee status.
