Building Performance Engineer
A Building Performance Engineer actively contributes to sustainability consulting and high performance design and operations analysis for internal and external projects and clients. The role interfaces with clients, manages project budget and schedule, and collaborates with team members on other projects.
Essential Functions- Creates energy models using industry-standard software to assess code compliance and high performance design
- Analyzes, reviews, and consults on project documentation of energy‑related systems in architectural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing drawings and specifications
- Performs calculations to document various MEP‑related credits in the LEED rating systems
- Manages individually assigned projects by monitoring the budget and schedule and maintaining communication with the client to ensure project completion to the client’s expectations
- Capable of working on and/or managing multiple projects, clients, and deadlines simultaneously
- Communicates high performance design and sustainable design regulations to project teams through coordination meetings and technical reports
- Assists senior staff and service line director in procuring and pursuing new work and new clients through proposal development and project interviews, as needed
- Maintains a positive relationship with internal and external clients through proactive, high-quality communication and work product
- Attends and leads project design/construction meetings as needed
- Participates in building walk‑throughs and site visits for Energy Star ratings and other energy performance evaluations
- Regularly reviews updates and addenda to energy‑ and sustainability‑related codes and policies
- Develops technical documentation, proposals, and presentations for clients
- Continuously looks for ways to improve the speed and efficiency of task completion and proactively shares best practices with the team
- Continuously expands knowledge of building science and MEP system design & control, as well as the software, tools, codes, and rating systems that support our service lines
- Communicates across disciplines (MEP, Architect, Contractor) for workflow and information needs for deliverables
- Assists with training of less experienced colleagues on energy‑ and sustainability‑related documentation and processes
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Knowledge of energy modeling simulation programs (e.g., IESVE, Trane TRACE 700)
- Knowledge of HVAC systems, loads, and controls
- Knowledge of standards, codes, and rating systems associated with sustainability and energy performance
- Knowledge of sustainable building practices
- Knowledge and understanding of energy modeling process
- Knowledge of LEED credit requirements
- Comprehension – ability to understand information, ideas, and direction presented in writing and/or verbally communicated
- Written communication skills – ability to clearly deliver a message through written words using correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation
- Speech clarity – ability to speak clearly and in a common language so that others can understand you
- Detail‑oriented – ability to achieve accuracy and thoroughness when accomplishing a task; pays attention to details and understand what caused a certain outcome
- Teamwork and collaboration skills – ability to work productively with other team members for project and team success; ability to assume varying roles/responsibilities depending on specific project, client and team needs
- Judgment and decision‑making skills – ability to make reasoned judgments that are logical and well thought out; constructively question and analyze information in order to make the best conclusion
- Technical writing skills – skilled in summarizing or explaining technical information in a clear, concise, and accurate way, communicating the intended point
- Presentation skills – effective in a variety of presentation settings both inside and outside the organization; commands attention and can manage group processes during the presentation; can change tactics midstream when something isn’t working
