Duties and Responsibilities

A Postdoctoral Fellow ("postdoc") is a professional apprenticeship designed to develop further the research skills acquired in a doctoral program or to learn new research techniques, in preparation for an academic or research career. In the process of further developing their own research skills, postdocs are expected to play a significant role in the performance of research at the University and to augment the role of graduate faculty in providing research instruction to graduate students.

  • The appointee was recently (within the last eight years) awarded a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field and has a strong background in power electronics with experimental research experience.
  • The appointment is temporary.
  • The appointment involves substantially full‑time research or scholarship.
  • The appointment is viewed as preparatory for a full‑time academic and/or research career.
  • The appointee works under the supervision of a faculty member.
  • The appointee has the freedom and is expected to publish the results of his or her research or scholarship during the period of appointment.

The employee will report to Professor Tiefu Zhao and will be a senior member of the research group, supporting projects through original research, collaboration with other team members, and mentoring of students.

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow position focuses on advanced power electronics, protection systems, and electrification technologies. The successful candidate will support multiple externally funded research projects, including AI‑enabled DC solid‑state circuit breakers for next‑generation data centers, solid‑state and hybrid transformer technologies for grid modernization, and wireless power transfer systems for electric trolley and rail applications.

Primary responsibilities include hardware prototyping, modeling and simulation, experimental validation, project coordination, student mentoring, technical reporting, publication preparation, and collaboration with industry and government partners.

Qualifications

Required qualifications include a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field, a strong background in power electronics, and experience with experimental research.

Preferred qualifications include experience with SiC/GaN devices, solid‑state circuit breakers, arc‑fault detection, solid‑state transformers, wireless power transfer, and medium‑voltage (MV) testing.
