Responsibilities
- Provide engineering/technical expertise in the area of transmission line design.
- Analyze scenarios, evaluate options, and perform design calculations to comply with design standards, applicable codes and sound engineering practices.
- Support transmission line routing/siting, create conceptual designs and cost estimates, and perform detailed design of structure, foundation, and electrical components for transmission line projects.
- Provide construction support, oversight and related activities.
- Guide the identification, analysis and resolution of complex problems in transmission line design.
- Prepare thorough and accurate job packages, technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and drawings.
- Conduct analysis and recommend process enhancements and design standards relative to the area of assignment.
- Conduct engineering and related studies; complete non‑routine engineering projects with minimal oversight, independently managing project schedules and interfaces.
- Design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems.
- Ensure completion of transmission line projects and overall business goals through effective planning, organizing, estimating, execution and monitoring of work activities.
- Handle differing situations requiring creative solutions in the area of expertise.
- Modify designs to address construction issues, environmental circumstances and public concerns.
- Assist construction in troubleshooting and problem resolution and provide on‑site support.
- Make informed decisions that may impact major projects or business/department results.
- Apply fundamental engineering concepts, practices and procedures; be proficient in technical and analytical competencies required for assignments of increasing complexity.
- Develop positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities.
- Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills.
- Maintain accurate records and files.
- Support the company’s goals and represent the company positively and professionally.
Required Qualifications
- Graduation from a four‑year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET‑accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer.
- A Master’s degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree.
- Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience, or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.
- Professional Engineer Licensure.
- Experience in the utility industry.
- Proficiency in transmission line design theories and principles.
- Proficiency with transmission line design software (e.g., PLS‑CADD, PLS‑TOWER, PLS‑POLE, MFAD, etc.).
- Proficiency in engineering theories and applying engineering principles to solve problems.
- Familiarity with applicable design codes and standards.
- Proficiency in researching solutions, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting those recommendations.
- Ability to collaborate with a variety of individuals from different socio‑economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Proficiency in principles of project management.
5‑15% travel.
Work‑Location FlexibilityHybrid Mobility Classification – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. Hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility.
