Essential Duties and Responsibilities:The Energy Engineer serves as the University's technical expert for energy management, utility analysis, and energy efficiency initiatives across campus facilities. This position supports the monitoring, analysis, and optimization of energy and water usage to reduce operating costs, improve system performance, and advance institutional sustainability goals.
Working closely with Facilities Maintenance, Capital Projects, and internal and external partners, the Energy Engineer provides engineering-level analysis, identifies mechanical and operational deficiencies, and supports the implementation of energy efficiency and conservation projects. This role balances analytical work, field investigations, and project support, with a long‑term focus on total cost of ownership and campus-wide energy performance.
Utility Analysis & Energy Monitoring- Track and analyze campus energy and water use (electricity, gas, water, etc.)
- Review and validate utility bills and identify cost‑saving opportunities
- Detect abnormal usage and recommend corrective actions
- Develop reports, trends, and performance metrics (KPIs)
- Perform energy audits (from basic walkthroughs to detailed analyses)
- Identify inefficiencies in HVAC, lighting, and control systems
- Calculate energy savings and lifecycle costs
- Recommend upgrades, operational improvements, and efficiency strategies
- Use building automation system (BAS) data and analytics tools to optimize performance
- Identify system faults and inefficiencies
- Support continuous commissioning and system re‑commissioning efforts
- Assist with troubleshooting and verifying improvements
- Help plan and implement energy‑saving projects
- Evaluate project ROI and prioritize investments
- Review designs for new construction/renovations for energy efficiency
- Support commissioning of systems and long‑term equipment standards
- Contribute to campus energy planning and sustainability initiatives
- Ensure compliance with energy/environmental regulations
- Stay current on new technologies and best practices
- Support long‑term infrastructure and capital planning
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Energy Engineering, or a related field
- Three years of experience in energy engineering, facility operations, commissioning, or building performance analysis
- Or, an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Strong understanding of HVAC systems, controls, energy efficiency strategies, and building operations
- Proficiency in energy data analysis, benchmarking, and reporting
- Familiarity with BAS, metering systems, and building analytics platforms
- Ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, technicians, contractors, and leadership
- Strong communication, documentation, and analytical skills
