Overview
The Engineer II position is the intermediate level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with general supervision. An Engineer II is expected to develop advanced skills and work with greater independence, effectively applying fundamental concepts and procedures to fairly complex and varied work.
Responsibilities- Provide engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of well‑defined problems in your area of expertise.
- Contribute to team decision‑making in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities.
- Prepare thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to well‑defined problems and moderate‑scope analysis.
- Conduct engineering and related studies; design, operate and maintain systems with minimal impact on existing systems.
- Apply fundamental concepts, practices and procedures; demonstrate technical proficiency and interpret technical information and instructions.
- Develop positive working relationships to coordinate work activities and maintain accurate records and files.
- Support company goals and represent the company positively and professionally.
- Work effectively and remain focused on operational excellence during times of ambiguity.
- Seek and share information and perspectives with others to create mutually beneficial outcomes.
- Engage in frequent working‑group phone calls and face‑to‑face meetings to coordinate and implement changes.
- Strive to continually improve technical and professional knowledge, skills and performance.
- Provide storm support (as needed) and quality designs.
- Must have obtained a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
- Minimum of 2 years of engineering experience.
- Master’s degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. degree.
Preferred Qualifications
- Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles, and the research and design process of evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and presenting them.
- Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from diverse socio‑economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
- Good written and oral communication skills.
- Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.
- Understanding of basic project‑management principles.
- Experience in the utility industry.
- Department‑specific experience applicable to the hiring department.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Hybrid mobility classification: work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. Hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to a Duke Energy facility.
