Instrumentation & Controls Engineer
Job Description
The Instrumentation & Controls Engineer will support engineering, design, and modernization initiatives for nuclear power generation facilities. This role focuses on process instrumentation that monitors variables such as temperature, pressure, flow, and level, and on the control systems that use these signals for plant indication, alarm, and control. The engineer will develop and review engineering design packages, evaluate vendor solutions, prepare and review electrical and instrumentation drawings, and support field implementation activities.
The position plays a key role in digital upgrade projects, ensuring compliance with nuclear regulatory requirements and verifying that new system designs meet operational and regulatory expectations while providing technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers.
Responsibilities
+ Develop, review, and validate engineering design packages for instrumentation and control systems in nuclear power plants.
+ Evaluate vendor solutions and provide technical oversight to ensure alignment with project requirements and nuclear industry standards.
+ Prepare and review electrical and instrumentation drawings, specifications, and related design documentation.
+ Support field implementation activities, including testing, validation, and commissioning of new or modified I&C systems.
+ Perform technical evaluations for plant modifications, modernization projects, and digital upgrade initiatives.
+ Ensure that instrumentation and control system designs comply with NRC regulations and applicable nuclear standards.
+ Verify that new and upgraded systems meet operational, safety, and regulatory expectations for commercial nuclear facilities.
+ Support analog-to-digital upgrade projects, including replacement of legacy systems with modern digital control platforms.
+ Work closely with clients, project teams, vendors, and fellow engineers to plan and execute plant modifications and modernization projects.
+ Provide technical leadership across assigned projects, serving as a subject matter expert in instrumentation and controls.
+ Review and mentor junior engineering staff, offering guidance on design approaches, calculations, and best practices.
+ Perform engineering calculations and design change assessments related to instrumentation and control system performance.
+ Conduct design reviews and participate in technical meetings to resolve design issues and optimize system performance.
+ Support plant control system design efforts, including architecture definition and integration of PLC and DCS platforms.
+ Participate in field testing and validation activities to confirm correct operation of instrumentation and control systems.
+ Apply nuclear standards, NRC requirements, and digital upgrade best practices to project execution.
+ Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including project management, design, field services, vendors, and client stakeholders, to ensure successful project delivery.
+ Consider cybersecurity aspects when working with digital control systems and modern I&C architectures.
Essential Skills
+ Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution.
+ At least 10 years of experience in Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Engineering, including experience in nuclear power plants.
+ Significant experience supporting instrumentation and control system design, modification, or modernization projects within commercial nuclear power plants.
+
Experience with digital upgrade initiatives and application of NRC regulations in nuclear power environments.
+ Strong understanding of process instrumentation used to measure and monitor temperature, pressure, flow, tank levels, and similar variables.
+ Hands-on experience with control systems, including PLC-based systems and Distributed Control Systems (DCS).
+ Knowledge of DCS platforms, with familiarity with Ovation systems considered valuable.
+ Strong understanding of control system architecture and nuclear regulatory requirements.
+ Experience supporting digital modernization projects and analog-to-digital upgrades in nuclear power plants.
+ Ability to prepare, review, and validate engineering design documentation, including drawings, calculations, and specifications.
+ Ability to provide technical oversight and participate in design change evaluations and vendor reviews.
Additional
Skills & Qualifications
+ Professional Engineer (PE) license or active progress toward obtaining a PE.
+
Experience with major nuclear plant modification and upgrade projects.
+ Prior experience providing technical mentorship and conducting design reviews for other engineering staff.
+ Familiarity with cybersecurity considerations for digital control systems and modern I&C architectures.
