Senior Piping Designer

We are seeking an experienced Senior Piping Designer with strong plant layout experience, preferably within the power generation industry, to join a growing engineering and design team in Charlotte, North Carolina. This position serves as a technical leader responsible for plant layout development, design execution, and coordination across multidisciplinary project teams supporting large-scale power, energy, and industrial projects.

The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience developing complex piping layouts, leading design efforts, mentoring junior staff, and ensuring constructible, code-compliant, and efficient facility designs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and execute plant layout design activities with a focus on constructability, safety, maintainability, and compliance with applicable codes and industry standards.
  • Support department leadership with technical execution, schedule management, quality assurance, and budget awareness related to piping design and layout activities.
  • Assist with the development and review of project proposals and engineering estimates.
  • Direct and coordinate the work of piping designers, drafters, and support personnel throughout project execution.
  • Develop, review, and approve general arrangement drawings and plant layout packages.
  • Develop, review, and approve piping plans, piping arrangements, sections, isometrics, and 3D models.
  • Manage piping design deliverables including layout drawings, construction drawings, material take-offs, and bills of materials.
  • Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and training to designers, drafters, and checkers.
  • Manage defined scopes of work or piping systems on large and complex projects.
  • Coordinate with process, mechanical, structural, electrical, and construction teams to resolve design and interface challenges.
  • Interface with clients, vendors, and construction personnel to ensure project requirements are properly incorporated into design deliverables.
  • Review vendor and fabrication drawings for compliance with project requirements and layout intent.
  • Maintain engineering document indexes and piping progress reports.
  • Support project planning, scheduling, staffing forecasts, and resource requirements.
  • Perform additional duties as required to support project and departmental objectives.
Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or Associate Degree with relevant drafting and design coursework.
  • 12+ years of piping design and plant layout experience in industrial facilities.
  • Experience supporting power generation projects such as combined cycle, simple cycle, thermal, utility-scale, or similar industrial facilities preferred.
  • Proven expertise in piping layout development for complex industrial plants.
  • Strong understanding of piping codes, standards, and industry best practices.
  • Advanced proficiency with AutoCAD, Micro Station, Revit, or similar design software.
  • Experience with Plant 3D and/or AVEVA E3D strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency with Navisworks and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience directing design teams and coordinating multidisciplinary project efforts.
  • Strong communication, organization, problem-solving, and time management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining quality and schedule commitments.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certificate in Design/Drafting or related technical discipline.
  • Direct experience with power plant piping layout, including:
    • Turbine Buildings
    • HRSG Systems
    • Balance-of-Plant Systems
    • Utility and Auxiliary Systems
  • Experience supporting EPC and industrial facility projects from conceptual design through construction.
