As Manager of Metallurgy Team, you will lead a team of metallurgists in Charlotte, NC, providing Metallurgical Engineering support to a global network of design, manufacturing, and service operations supporting large turbine generators for the power utility market.

This role combines technical leadership and people management, with approximately 50% of your time dedicated to metallurgical engineering support and 50% focused on leading and developing the Metallurgy team. You will plan and coordinate team activities to meet organizational needs while delivering high-quality technical support within budget. You will report directly to the head of the Generator Materials Engineering department.

Working closely with materials engineers and cross-functional teams, you will support generator manufacturing, supply chain management, new product design, service engineering, production processes, failure investigations, and corrective actions. You and your team will provide metallurgical expertise across all life-cycle stages of metallic materials and components, including material and supplier qualification, material selection, and support for the Siemens Energy turbine-generator product portfolio.

You’ll Make An Impact
  • Provide technical leadership and organizational direction for metallurgical engineering support of large turbine generators while managing, developing, and optimizing the performance of the Metallurgy team.
  • Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, service, and design organizations to support material selection, product development, manufacturing processes, supplier qualification, and life-cycle management of metallic materials and components.
  • Develop and implement innovative materials concepts, processes, specifications, testing programs, and design improvements for new product manufacturing, service, repair, and modernization activities.
  • Perform and lead material investigations, including material property analysis, failure analysis, root cause analysis, fractography, metallurgical evaluations, and determination of critical performance parameters.
  • Support manufacturing through technical consultation, problem solving, disposition of product deviations, process reviews, continuous improvement initiatives, and qualification of domestic and international suppliers.
  • Represent Siemens Energy in customer, supplier, and industry discussions while participating in technical risk evaluations, design reviews, and FMEAs using applicable international standards.
  • Prepare and communicate engineering reports, technical specifications, presentations, manuals, patent disclosures, and other technical documentation while effectively conveying results and recommendations to leadership and key stakeholders.
What You Bring
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Materials Engineering with a concentration in Metallurgy required.
  • 15+ years of relevant experience in metallurgy, materials engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong and broad expertise in physical metallurgy, including experience analyzing and/or testing structural steels, stainless steels, large forgings, copper conductors, metals joining processes (welding and brazing), corrosion, failure analysis, and non-destructive testing.
  • Strong expertise in fractography and microstructural analysis of metallic materials.
  • Leadership experience managing and developing intercultural teams.
  • Project management experience and training.
  • Strong data analysis skills with the ability to interpret material performance and testing results.
  • Demonstrated aptitude and curiosity for continuous improvement in products and processes.
  • Ability to work independently, exercise sound technical judgment, and be self-directed.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to approximately 20%.
