Overview

The Director of Engineering is responsible for overseeing all engineering, maintenance, and facilities operations within the Aloft Hotel. This role ensures the hotel’s building systems, guest rooms, public areas, and back-of-house spaces are maintained to the highest standards of safety, functionality, efficiency, and guest satisfaction. The Director of Engineering will lead and develop a skilled engineering team while partnering with hotel leadership and other departments to support the property’s operational and financial objectives.

Responsibilities
  • Strategic Planning:
    Develop and implement a comprehensive engineering and maintenance strategy aligned with the hotel’s business objectives, brand standards, and operational needs.
  • Team Leadership:
    Recruit, hire, train, coach, schedule, and manage a high-performing engineering team. Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, safety, and exceptional service.
  • Budget Management:
    Develop and manage the engineering department budget, control expenses, monitor utility costs, and assist with capital expenditure planning and projects.
  • Maintenance and Repairs:
    Oversee, update, and actively participate in preventative maintenance programs, routine inspections, work orders, emergency repairs, and capital improvement projects to ensure the property remains in excellent operating condition.
  • Brand Standards:
    Ensure engineering and maintenance practices support Aloft Hotels and Marriott International standards, including guest room, public area, life-safety, and facility requirements.
  • Energy Efficiency:
    Identify opportunities to optimize energy consumption and implement energy-saving initiatives.
  • Regulatory Compliance:
    Ensure adherence to all local, state, and federal regulations, including building codes, fire safety, and environmental standards.
  • Guest Satisfaction:
    Prioritize guest comfort and satisfaction by addressing maintenance issues promptly and efficiently.
  • Vendor Management:
    Build and maintain strong relationships with vendors and contractors to ensure timely and quality service.
  • Safety and Security:
    Implement robust safety protocols and procedures to protect guests, employees, and property.
  • Quality Assurance:
    Conduct regular inspections of all facilities to identify potential issues and maintain high standards.
  • Preventative Maintenance:
    Maintain an effective preventative maintenance schedule for HVAC, plumbing, electrical, elevators, fire/life-safety systems, guest room equipment, and other critical building systems.
  • Emergency Response:
    Lead the engineering response to facility emergencies, equipment failures, utility interruptions, and other situations requiring immediate attention.
  • Cross-Department

    Collaboration:

    Partner closely with the General Manager, Operations, Housekeeping, Front Office, Food & Beverage, and other departments to address maintenance needs and support seamless hotel operations.
  • Work Manager on Duty Weekends as assigned and schedule to ensure full engineering coverage based on hotel needs.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field
  • 5+ years of experience in hotel engineering or facilities management
  • Strong leadership and management skills
  • Knowledge of building systems, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and fire safety systems
  • CPO Certified
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency in computer systems, including CMMS software
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays
