The Assistant Director of Finance leads the execution of accounting operations of the church, to include the production of periodic financial reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of the church’s reported financial results, and ensure that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles.
They are also responsible for daily and weekly cash management and supports the Executive Director of Operations for longer term cash forecasting and risk management.
- Management
- Maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures.
- Oversee the daily operations of the finance team.
- Oversee the accounting operations of subsidiary corporations, especially their control systems, transaction-processing operations, and policies and procedures.
- Transactions
- Build and oversee the team responsible for weekly donation processing.
- Update and maintain procedures for the count team to ensure all donations are processed accurately and in a timely manner.
- Maintain internal controls for the count team and ensure they are completely followed by all team members.
- Ensure that accounts receivable are processed in a timely manner.
- Oversee and direct our third-party accounting firm in their delegated responsibilities:
- Ensure that accounts payable are paid in a timely manner.
- Ensure that all reasonable discounts are taken on accounts payable.
- Ensure that periodic bank reconciliations are completed.
- Ensure that required debt payments are made on a timely basis.
- Maintain the chart of accounts.
- Maintain an orderly accounting filing system.
- Maintain a system of controls over all accounting transactions.
- Reporting
- Issue timely and complete financial statements and reports, including weekly executive reports.
- Coordinate the preparation of the annual report.
- Assist the Executive Director of Operations in the production of the budget and forecasts.
- Prepare the monthly budget vs actuals report.
- Compliance
- Coordinate the provision of information to external auditors for the annual audit.
- Monitor debt levels and compliance with debt covenants.
- Comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings, including 941, 1099, and 990-T filings.
The candidate should have a Bachelor's degree in accounting or business administration and 2+ years of progressively responsible experience in an environment of Public Accounting, Auditing, Church and/or Non-Profit Organizations. Preference will be given to candidates with the Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant designations, but this is not a requirement.
The successful candidate will be an expert Microsoft Excel maven. He or she will be well versed in all Microsoft Office products.
Other RequirementsAs a part of the Freedom House Church staff and team, this candidate may be asked to perform a variety of duties by our Senior Pastors or Executive Team.
