Our client is seeking a highly experienced Controller to oversee accounting operations, financial reporting, and job-level financial controls for a complex, multi-entity organization operating in an industrial or construction-related environment.
This role is both strategic and hands-on. The Controller will play a critical role in ensuring financial accuracy, managing cash flow, supporting job costing and profitability analysis, and serving as a key partner to leadership, banking partners, and external advisors. In this role, you'll operate at the center of the business - influencing profitability, cash flow, and strategic decision-making - while working closely with leadership in a dynamic, project-driven environment.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Operations & Close Process
* Lead the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close process, ensuring accuracy and timeliness
* Prepare and post journal entries, including WIP, depreciation, amortization, overhead allocations, warranty reserves, and accruals
* Close jobs in financial systems and ensure all related costs, revenues, and allocations are properly recorded
* Print and publish monthly financial statements and supporting schedules
* Reclass retained earnings and finalize year-end accounting entries
Job Costing, WIP & Project Accounting
* Set up new jobs and maintain accurate job costing and WIP schedules
* Review and post draws for cost-plus, renovation, custom, and development jobs
* Ensure all expenses are properly assigned to jobs and correct classes
* Accrue expenses for closed jobs and determine percentage-of-completion thresholds
* Prepare job close-out reporting, including cost-to-complete and bonus-related documentation
Cash Management & Banking
* Monitor cash daily and manage fund transfers across accounts as needed
* Scan and post incoming checks; communicate receipts for proper booking
* Open and close bank accounts as required
* Manage loan activity, interest payments, and related accounting entries
* Prepare cash flow forecasts and projections
* Provide bank reporting, inventory status updates, and special financial reports
Accounts Payable, Credit Cards & Expense Oversight
* Review and approve AP activity, credit card statements, and expense reports
* Ensure accurate coding, descriptions, and classifications
* Oversee recurring payments and auto-billing
* Maintain intercompany billing and clearing accounts
* Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, and balance sheet clearing accounts
Budgeting, Forecasting & Analysis
* Prepare the annual budget and input into accounting systems
* Maintain projections and rolling forecasts for leadership
* Compare actual results vs. budget and projections; identify issues or variances
* Prepare proformas, financial models, and ad hoc analysis as requested
* Publish key metrics, ratios, and performance dashboards
Payroll, Benefits & Compliance
* Support annual reviews, compensation summaries, and bonus calculations
* Calculate, accrue, and track builder bonuses and commissions
* Prepare 401(k) census data and support Form 5500 filings
* Manage benefits-related reporting and communications with insurers
* File quarterly Sales & Use Tax returns and coordinate tax payments
* Support audits for General Liability, Workers' Compensation, and Builder's Risk
External Reporting & Stakeholder Communication
* Serve as primary financial contact for banks, auditors, insurers, and tax advisors
* Prepare and distribute financial statements to banks and boards
* Support annual projections, board reporting, and lender requests
* Provide financial data for tax return preparation and regulatory filings
Systems, Process Improvement & Oversight
* Ensure integrity of accounting systems and job costing platforms
* Review prospect jobs and reclass expenses to active jobs as appropriate
* Support IT and business systems oversight related to finance
* Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy
Requirements
At least 8 years of progressive experience overseeing accounting operations, financial reporting, and job-level financial controls within a complex, multi-entity organization.
