Description of WorkThis position is assigned to Maury Correctional Institution located in Hookerton, NC. Work in this class involves first‑line supervision of Correctional Officer III’s in a close custody institution with restrictive and controlled housing. The position assigns lower‑level custody staff to a particular area or post. Employees oversee officer activities and performance and ensure that the custody, security and welfare of offenders is maintained.
Employees arrange work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implement operational procedures and ensure rules and regulations are followed according to policy. This level supervises more staff than the lower level Correctional Sergeant I or II. Positions report directly to a Correctional Lieutenant III and/or Correctional Housing Unit Manager.
- Ensure that staff are fully trained and that proper conduct, actions and procedures are followed.
- Maintain facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards relating to facility maintainance and health and safety of inmates.
- Give direction during drills, searches and in emergencies.
- Refer offenders to restrictive housing for temporary assignment and lead staff in carrying out tactical assignments.
- Respond to emergency situations, searches for escaped offenders and transport offenders.
- Conduct and/or supervise searches of offenders, their living quarters and work areas for contraband.
- Investigate and take action when appropriate regarding security issues, incidents, disputes and complaints.
- Prepare and review a variety of reports.
- Complete annual performance evaluations and assist in assessing, evaluating and implementing employee discipline.
- Conduct staff briefing sessions.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Skills and Abilities
/ Management Preferences
- Thorough knowledge of the overall operation of correctional facilities.
- Thorough knowledge of applicable policies, procedures, rules, and regulations associated with the control and management of inmates.
- Thorough knowledge of disciplinary procedures and techniques appropriate for persons under criminal confinement.
- Thorough knowledge of rules and regulations associated with the control and management of inmates; and of correctional methods, techniques, practices, and procedures.
- Skill in the use and care of firearms.
- Skill in coordinating, supervising, and evaluating the work of subordinate custody staff.
- Ability to think and act quickly in emergencies in order to determine and implement effective and appropriate courses of action.
- Ability to prepare reports.
High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of experience as a Correctional Officer, or two years of experience as a Correctional Officer III; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.
