About The PositionThe Respite Peer Support Specialist will provide trauma‑sensitive peer‑to‑peer support within the context of the peer respite. Duties include advocacy, connecting peers to local resources, housing and benefit support, one‑on‑one and group support, and managing the peer support warm line when needed.

What You’ll Do- Share personal experience, encourage mental health wellness and recovery, and validate different recovery pathways.
- Assist in connecting peers to mental health services, community resources, and other supports.
- Apply knowledge of trauma‑informed care, theories, principles, and practices.
- Provide telephone support to peers through the 24‑hour warm line.
- Help maintain a clean, safe, and secure environment; perform cleaning duties as assigned.
- Manage downtime while focusing on wellness and recovery activities.
- Work cooperatively with the respite team and communicate openly and respectfully.
- Offer peer‑to‑peer support to guests throughout all phases of their stay.
- Contribute to creating a bed‑and‑breakfast‑like, healing environment.
- Believe in recovery potential for all people with mental health/substance use challenges and uphold the philosophy of peer support.
- Recognize the difference between a mental health crisis and a medical emergency, knowing when to refer to 911 or crisis services.
- Self‑reflect, receive feedback, guidance, training, and mentoring to grow skills.
- Maintain documentation, tracking, and reporting as required.
- Perform all other duties assigned by the CEO, Executive team, or Leadership team.
- Current North Carolina Certified Peer Support Specialist.
- Lived experience with substance use disorder and/or mental health challenges, meeting NC PSS eligibility criteria.
- Belief in recovery potential for all people and commitment to the peer support philosophy.
- Ability to receive guidance, training, and mentoring to advance skills.
- Demonstrated leadership by modeling PRN’s mission, values, and guidance to team members.
- Dependable, reliable, team‑player with determination and personal responsibility.
- Honest, ethical, and approachable.
- Effective communication with public, providers, and stakeholders.
- Committed to personal recovery and wellness; personal history of receiving crisis‑based support.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast‑paced environment.
- Strong commitment to the organization’s mission and values.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, active listening, open questioning, validation, and conflict resolution.
- Proficient in a variety of computer applications (word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentations).
- Valid North Carolina driver’s license.
