* Job Description:
**** Position Summary
** The Financial Counselor supports patients by explaining insurance benefits, estimating out-of-pocket costs, and arranging payment options. This role acts as a bridge between patients, providers, and billing staff to ensure patients understand their financial responsibility and feel supported throughout their care.
** Key Responsibilities
*** Meet with patients (in person or by phone) to review insurance coverage, benefits, and eligibility, providing a clear explanation of patient’s out of pocket expenses
* Verify insurance information and confirm appropriate referrals/authorizations are in place
* Provide accurate cost estimates for procedures, treatments, and services
* Explain payment policies, billing processes, and financial responsibility in a clear, compassionate manner
* Assist patients with payment plans, financial assistance programs, etc.
* Collect treatment deposits and set up payment arrangements according to office policy
* Coordinate with billing, coding, and clinical staff to resolve coverage or billing issues
* Document all patient interactions accurately in the practice management system
* Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and regulatory requirements
* Stay up to date on insurance guidelines, payer rules, and healthcare regulations
** Required Qualifications
*** High school diploma or equivalent (Associate’s degree preferred)
* 1–3 years of experience in a medical office, healthcare billing, insurance verification, or financial counseling role
* Strong understanding of insurance plans in the state of North Carolina
* Excellent communication and customer service skills
* Ability to explain complex financial information in an empathetic, patient-friendly way
* Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
* Proficiency with EHR and practice management systems
** Preferred Qualifications
*** Experience in a specialty practice, oncology preferred
* Knowledge of revenue cycle processes and medical billing codes
** Skills & Competencies

* Problem-solving and conflict resolution skills
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team
* Time management and multitasking abilities
