Job Summary

As a member of the Waste Management People organization, the HR Advisor is tasked with providing tactical, responsive HR support to individual contributors in assigned business units and/or functions. The position serves as the first point of contact and trusted advisor for employee relations issues and human resources policies and processes.

This position is for a Field HR Advisor who must be based in Charlotte NC and supports an employee population of approximately 350 individuals across North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. This individual will support our post-collections business partners (landfill, recycling, transfer stations, etc) and requires heavy travel throughout the area (40‑50% travel).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provides reliable and timely coaching and counseling to employees on issues to ensure consistent, transparent application of policies, procedures, and employment laws.
  • Identifies, communicates, and resolves complex employee relations issues balancing employee advocacy with stewardship of company policies and employment laws.
  • Serves as the local People point of contact supporting/delivering internal processes including Performance Management, New Hire Orientation and Exit interviews.
  • Conducts training on company policy, programs, and other issues as they arise.
  • Partners and participates with local team(s) on recruitment outreach efforts.
  • Serves as an active member of People related project teams as assigned.
  • Serves as a mentor to others within the People department by providing technical advice and guidance.
  • Assists the People Manager in the development and maintenance of processes and policies as well as new initiatives.
  • Apprise and escalates potential legal, risk, safety, etc. concerns to the People Manager.
Supervisory Responsibilities

This job has no supervisory duties.

Qualifications

Education and Experience
  • Education:

    Bachelor’s Degree (accredited) in Human Resources, Business Administration or similar area of study, or in lieu of degree, High School Diploma or GED (accredited) and four (4) years of relevant work experience.
  • Experience:

    Four (4) years of relevant work experience in an HR Advisor or Generalist capacity.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations or Other Requirements
  • PHR, SHRM-CP, or CHRP Certification preferred.

  • Comfort with ambiguity; strong learning agility mindset to embrace and drive change.
Work Environment
  • Required to use motor coordination with finger dexterity (such as keyboarding, machine operation, etc.) most of the work day.
  • Required to exert physical effort in handling objects less than 30 pounds rarely.
  • Required to be exposed to physical occupational risks (such as cuts, burns, exposure to toxic chemicals, etc.) rarely.
  • Required to be exposed to physical environment which involves dirt, odors, noise, weather extremes or similar elements rarely.
  • Normal setting for this job is an office setting, however, operational site visits are required with exposure to weather and areas where large equipment is operated.
  • Ability to travel 10% - 30% of the time depending upon geographic span of responsibility.
