Job Description

The U.S. Bank Law Division is seeking an experienced attorney to join our Operations, Technology and Regulatory Team to act as Lead AI counsel supporting the AI Center of Excellence on enterprise AI efforts. This unique role will put you at the center of U.S. Bank’s AI initiatives, with a focus on advising and empowering our AI Center of Excellence and our enterprise AI efforts.

This role provides legal and regulatory leadership for the development, deployment, and oversight of AI systems across the enterprise, ensuring compliance, ethical use, and alignment with financial services laws and standards. The role will partner closely with other Law Division subject matter experts, technology teams, risk functions, and product owners. This position rewards a curious, collaborative, and entrepreneurial person who is eager to dive in, get to know U.S. Bank’s business and technology, and then identify and solve problems.

Primary

Responsibilities
  • Interpret and advise on emerging AI‑related laws, regulations, and guidance (e.g., banking regulations, consumer protection, data privacy, algorithmic accountability, AI safety requirements).
  • Monitor global regulatory developments related to AI and machine learning and assess impact on enterprise strategy and operations.
  • Partner with risk and technology teams to advise on legal risks associated with training data, model transparency, bias mitigation, and system outputs.
  • Provide practical legal guidance in the design and deployment of generative AI and automated decisioning systems.
  • Provide assistance to the Procurement team with review and negotiating contracts with AI vendors, cloud providers, and data licensors.
  • Educate Law Division and business leaders on AI‑related legal risks and opportunities.
  • Work with Legal Operations to develop strategy for Law Division’s use of AI.
Basic Qualifications
  • Licensed by and in good standing with the appropriate state bar association or other appropriate state attorney licensing authority.
  • 10+ years of legal experience, with significant experience in financial services, technology, or regulatory counseling.
  • Expertise in AI/ML technology issues, privacy law, and data governance.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex, cross‑functional initiatives in highly regulated environments.
  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to convey technical concepts to non‑technical stakeholders.
Preferred Skills/Experience
  • Experience advising on generative AI, large language models, and advanced analytics.
  • Experience working in‑house at a major bank, fintech, payments company, or regulatory agency.
  • Familiarity with global AI frameworks (e.g., EU AI Act, UK AI regulations, emerging U.S. federal and state AI legislation).
  • Technical fluency or advanced comfort with data science concepts.
  • Prior leadership of a legal team focused on technology or AI governance.
Location Expectations

The role offers a hybrid schedule with an in‑office expectation of 3 or more days per week at a U.S. Bank hub and the flexibility to work outside the office location for the other days. May require occasional business travel to meet with clients in other locations.
