The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community.

The Correctional Housing Unit II position is located at Eastern Correctional Institution in Maury NC, which houses approximately 477 medium or close custody male offenders. This position provides direct support to the Correctional Housing Unit Manager III and assumes responsibility for the overall management of the correctional housing unit in the absence of the Correctional Housing Unit Manager III.
This position’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Duties- Assuming responsibility for the overall management of the correctional housing unit in the absence of the CHUM III.
- Providing leadership and guidance to subordinate staff and ensuring staff are alert, properly trained, informed and prepared to perform their job responsibilities under a variety of conditions.
- Coordinating work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implementing standard operational procedures and ensuring rules and regulations are followed according to policy.
- Maintaining facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards relating to facility maintenance, health, and safety of offenders.
- Communicating effective instruction/direction during drills, searches, and in emergencies situations.
- Responding to emergency situations such as distress codes, escapes, and transportation of offenders.
- Conducting and/or supervising searches of offenders, offender living areas and work areas for contraband.
- Investigating and taking action when appropriate regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints.
- Preparing, reviewing reports and completing performance evaluations on subordinate staff.
- Serving on a variety of institutional committees as needed.
- Documented supervisory skills in a prison facility.
- Knowledge of facility operations.
- Knowledge of Prisons’ policy and procedures.
** This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits.

If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.
Minimum Education and ExperienceHigh School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and five years of correctional experience, two of which must have been at the supervisory level; or an equivalent combination of education and experience Necessary Special Qualifications Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
