Material Handler – 2nd Shift
This role works as part of a collaborative team in a fast-paced metal service center to accurately fill and prepare customer orders for shipment. You will handle a variety of raw metal materials, including carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and red metals, supporting customers that range from small shops to large industrial operations. The position focuses on safely operating material handling equipment, ensuring precise measurement and verification of materials, and maintaining a clean and organized work area to support next-day order turnaround.
The shift hours are from 3:00p - 11:00p.
Responsibilities
- Pull and prepare customer orders, including metal sheets and metal bars, according to work instructions and order specifications.
- Accurately measure, count, and verify materials using measuring tapes and other tools to ensure correct sizes, quantities, and types of metal are selected.
- Follow basic work instructions or blueprints to support accurate and timely order fulfillment.
- Load, stage, and organize materials for shipment, ensuring orders are clearly labeled and ready for transport.
- Operate and handle overhead cranes and side loaders after receiving training and recertification.
- Cross-train and assist in operating metal saws, shears, and laser machines as needed to support production and order processing.
- Use RF scanners and inventory tools to track, locate, and update material movements and stock levels.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area by following housekeeping standards and removing debris or hazards.
- Follow all safety procedures and company policies when handling materials, operating equipment, and moving through the facility.
- Work effectively as part of a team to meet customer deadlines and support a fast-paced, high-volume metal distribution operation.
- Perform general labor tasks, including heavy lifting and repetitive motion, to support daily warehouse and processing activities.
Essential Skills
- Experience performing picking, packing, and general labor tasks in an industrial or warehouse environment.
- Ability to safely lift and move materials weighing approximately 50–75 lbs on a regular basis.
- Comfort working in a fast-paced metal distribution or warehouse setting with frequent standing, bending, and repetitive motion.
- Basic mechanical aptitude to learn and operate material handling and processing equipment.
- Ability to read and follow basic work instructions or blueprints to support accurate order fulfillment.
- Proficiency using measuring tapes and other measurement tools to verify dimensions of metal products.
- Ability to use RF scanners and inventory tools to track and manage materials.
- Strong attention to detail to ensure accurate counts, measurements, and order verification.
- Consistently positive, team-oriented attitude with a focus on reliability and safety.
- Willingness to work 2nd shift and adapt to shift-based operations in a metal processing facility.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Interest in learning to operate overhead cranes, side loaders, metal saws, shears, and laser machines.
- Willingness to complete recertification and cross-training on various lifting and processing equipment.
- Comfort working around heavy machinery, moving equipment, and metal products.
- Openness to structured training through a formal 13-week onboarding program.
- Ability to follow safety guidelines and contribute to a safe, compliant work environment.
