Position: RN Inpatient - Part Time with Benefits

Position Overview

The Registered Nurse performs nursing procedures to patients of all ages independently within the framework of established policy in the Inpatient Department at Cherokee Indian Hospital, Cherokee, North Carolina. The RN is responsible for assessment of patients, development, implementation, and evaluation of a patient plan of care; administration of therapeutic measures; teaching and counseling of patients and families; and participation in the development of nursing policies, procedures, and quality assurance standards.

Responsibilities
  • Provides nursing care in accordance with established nursing care standards and participates in emergency care, routine, curative, rehabilitative, and preventive nursing care.
  • Demonstrates ability and willingness to adapt to special circumstances such as patient emergencies, fluctuations in census and acuity, and disasters.
  • May be required to rotate between nursing departments including outpatient and the emergency department.
  • Works on a regularly assigned or rotational basis to provide continuity of services during evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays; may be required to rotate shifts and be subject to on‑call and callback.
  • Participates in cross training of services within the nursing department.
  • Evaluated annually on ability to identify, assess, analyze, and evaluate data and solve problems.
  • Performs ongoing assessment by actively determining nursing care needs based on data collection and interpretation.
  • Collects data from relevant biological, psychological, social, and cultural factors and applies them to patient care decisions.
  • Interprets data, recognizes relationships between data and client’s health status, and determines need for immediate nursing interventions.
  • Reviews patient health records, interviews patients and families, documents findings, and determines priority of care.
  • Plans patient care according to individual assessed needs and established hospital policies.
  • Functions as charge nurse when assigned, assigns staff, provides technical supervision, and resolves problems.
  • Initiates plan of care based on assessment of specific illnesses, injuries, and diseases.
  • Develops observable patient outcomes that are realistic and aligned with patient capabilities.
  • Plans for basic patient needs including health prevention, promotion, protection, comfort, nutrition, fluid balance, physiological functions, activity, rest, sleep, hygiene, oxygenation, and coping.
  • Implements nursing care per established health care plan and performs nursing interventions.
  • Detects changes in patient condition and takes appropriate action.
  • Recognizes and interprets serious situations and decides proper action immediately.
  • Initiates appropriate resuscitative measures in emergencies.
  • Initiates safety measures to protect patients.
  • Documents observations, interventions, progress, needs, treatments, diagnoses, side effects, teaching, and outcome, and communicates information to physicians and other health personnel.
  • Administers and documents medications per protocols, hospital policy, and State Board of Nursing regulations.
  • Ensures medications, treatments, and tests are performed appropriately and timely; reports medication errors.
  • Provides counseling, teaching, and anticipatory guidance to patients and families.
  • Provides guidance, leadership, and training to other nursing personnel.
  • Coordinates care through referrals to community and tribal resources.
  • Maintains a safe environment through Universal Precautions, Body Substance Isolation, and waste management.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities and reports risk management issues.
  • Ensures adequacy of supplies and proper functioning of medical equipment; keeps work areas clean.
  • Advocates for patient confidentiality and promotes positive communication.
  • Serves on committees as appointed and promotes constructive communication with all departments.
  • Functions appropriately during disasters.
  • Updates competency through training and in‑services.
  • Evaluates and revises patient care as needed.
  • Documents nursing care and patient progress per policy.
  • Participates in ongoing nursing quality assurance program.
