Position Overview
The Nurse Manager - Surgery Trauma at Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center is responsible for delivering the most remarkable patient experience, in every dimension, every time, while leading a high‑performing 24‑bed inpatient unit serving a diverse surgical, trauma, and medical population. The unit cares for post‑surgical patients including colorectal, urological, ENT, women’s surgery overflow, orthopedic, and general surgery, in addition to trauma and select medical patients.
With a 1:5 nurse‑to‑patient ratio, the team delivers safe, high‑quality care in a fast‑paced acute care environment. The Nurse Manager fosters an environment that allows team members to be fully present with patients and families, supporting their impact on the health and well‑being of our community through the nursing process. This leader maintains strong unit visibility, spending approximately 50% of their time on the floor to provide mentorship, coaching, and real‑time operational support.
The unit has strong engagement scores and high patient satisfaction, and the Nurse Manager will build upon this foundation, driving continued excellence in quality outcomes, workforce engagement, throughput, and financial stewardship.
In close partnership with physicians and interdisciplinary leaders, this role requires a strategic and operational nursing leader who can sustain excellence, support continued growth, and further strengthen an already high‑performing team.
Ideal Candidate Profile- Minimum of two years of progressive leadership experience (Clinical Coordinator, Assistant Nurse Manager, or Nurse Manager)
- Post‑surgical or acute care experience preferred
- Strong operational acumen with ability to lead in a high‑volume, high‑acuity environment
- Committed to team development, engagement, and maintaining strong patient outcomes
- Leadership of a fully staffed, high‑performing unit with strong engagement and patient satisfaction scores

- Education:
4‑Year/Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, required. Graduate degree preferred. - Experience:
Two years demonstrated leadership experience, preferred. Three years clinical RN experience in an acute care setting, preferred. - Licensure/certification/registration:
Current RN licensure in appropriate state, required. NC state approved curricula for restrictive interventions (facility specific) within 3 months of hire for Emergency Departments and Behavioral Health units, required. Board certification in area of practice, preferred. - Additional skills required:
Understands and applies current and future trends/practice in area of responsibility; regulatory and governing standards, policies and procedures; information systems and software used; equipment; application of safety and infection control policies and procedures; skills in interviewing and selection process; understanding of budgeting, staffing, payroll and purchasing processes; implementation of competency, feedback, development and progressive discipline processes; teambuilding, conflict management, and interpersonal relationship skills;
principles of adult learning and teaching methods/models; decision making, project leadership and consultation, delegation and communication skills; customer needs and expectations and knowledge for improvement to exceed customer expectations; principles of change management.
