5 North is a 26-bed General Surgery specialty unit. We are categorized as a Med‑Surg Unit but are primarily surgical volume. We specialize in:

• Elective bariatric weight‑loss surgery – these patients are optimized for surgery and typically have a 24‑hour stay and are up and ambulating on postoperative day 0.
• General Surgery – appendectomies, cholecystectomies, small bowel obstruction, etc.
• Orthopedic – foot and ankle, ortho hand, and some ortho trauma.
• Urology surgery.

A nurse on our unit will gain experience in drains of all kinds, wound vacs, central lines, NGT, DHT, continuous bladder irrigation, and all surgical procedures.

Atrium Health Mercy is a 196‑bed facility that specializes in complex foot and ankle surgery, hip and knee surgery, bariatric surgery, and women’s pelvic health. The Registered Nurse (RN) is a member of Advocate Health Nursing Professional Governance community and delivers high‑quality, patient‑centered care through evidence‑based practice, clinical expertise, and compassionate care delivery. The RN collaborates with interdisciplinary teams, advocates for patient needs, and upholds professional practice standards to promote optimal health outcomes.

• Engages in unit councils, professional governance, and quality initiatives to improve care processes and apply evidence‑based practices.
• Utilizes the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care, engaging patients and families from admission to post‑discharge.
• Monitors patient conditions, adjusts care plans, mobilizes resources, and collaborates with the care team to influence care outcomes.
• Upholds and promotes a culture of safety.
• Continuously evaluates patient, team, and unit outcomes, taking action as needed.
• Administers medications, treatments, and therapies safely and according to clinical protocols and procedures.
• Demonstrates effective communication, feedback, and conflict resolution, fostering team collaboration and appropriate delegation.
• Pursues professional development, completes required education, and maintains certifications.
• Adheres to the ANA Code of Ethics and practices ethical decision‑making, respects interdisciplinary roles, and contributes to integrated, unbiased patient care.
• Appropriately delegates to other registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, nurse assistants, and other unlicensed assistive personnel.
• Maintains accurate, timely EHR documentation.
• May be required to float to other units, departments, or facilities within the designated service area to meet patient care needs.
• Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served, assessing age‑specific data and needs as described in the department’s policies and procedures.

• Basic Life Support (BLS). Additional education, training, certifications, or experience may be required based on specialty.
• Active, unrestricted registered nurse (RN) multi‑state compact and/or single‑state license with privileges to practice in the state(s) where the RN is providing client nursing services.
