Adjunct Instructor, Practical Nursing

Under limited supervision, the Adjunct Instructor, Practical Nursing provides instruction and supervision within the College's Practical Nursing program. Assignments are expected to focus primarily on clinical instruction, simulation-based learning, or a combination of both. The instructor facilitates safe, effective learning experiences; evaluates student achievement of course and clinical objectives; and supports students in developing the knowledge, judgment, technical skills, and professional behaviors required for entry-level practical nursing practice.

Scheduling and Assignment Information This is a part-time adjunct position with no guaranteed minimum number of hours. Individual assignments may include clinical instruction, simulation instruction, skills-laboratory instruction, or a combination of responsibilities. Hours, duration, work location, and instructional responsibilities will vary. Placement and instructional opportunities will be determined according to program needs, course and clinical schedules, enrollment, instructor qualifications and experience, clinical-agency availability, and the instructor's availability.

Applicants may be considered for immediate or future adjunct opportunities associated with the Practical Nursing cohort scheduled to begin in January 2027. Orientation, faculty development, course preparation, or clinical-agency onboarding may be required before the instructional assignment begins.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Depending on the assigned instructional responsibilities, the Adjunct Instructor may:

  • Provides clinical, laboratory, and/or simulation instruction consistent with approved course objectives, curriculum standards, College policies, and North Carolina Board of Nursing requirements.
  • Supervises students in assigned clinical settings and ensures that patient care is provided safely and within the student's authorized scope and demonstrated level of competency.
  • Facilitates simulation-based learning experiences, including prebriefing, scenario implementation, observation, debriefing, and evaluation.
  • Creates and maintains a supportive learning environment that promotes clinical reasoning, sound judgment, communication, teamwork, professionalism, and safe nursing practice.
  • Demonstrates and reinforces current nursing procedures, infection-prevention practices, medication-safety principles, documentation requirements, and standards of patient-centered care.
  • Evaluates student performance using established clinical, laboratory, simulation, and course-evaluation tools.
  • Provides timely, specific, and constructive feedback regarding student performance, strengths, deficiencies, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Identifies students who are not meeting established learning or performance expectations and promptly communicates concerns to the Director of Nursing.
  • Maintains accurate and timely records of student attendance, clinical hours, evaluations, assignments, competencies, and other required documentation.
  • Protects the privacy and confidentiality of student, patient, clinical-agency, and institutional information.
  • Collaborates with full-time and adjunct nursing faculty to ensure consistency in the implementation and evaluation of the Practical Nursing curriculum.
  • Communicates professionally and effectively with students, faculty, staff, clinical-agency personnel, patients, families, and other stakeholders.
  • Participates in required orientation, faculty meetings, course planning, clinical-agency onboarding, training, professional development, and program-evaluation activities.
  • Maintains competence and current knowledge in the areas of assigned instructional responsibility.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable College policies, clinical-agency requirements, safety procedures, and regulatory and accreditation standards.
  • Maintains appropriate professional boundaries and models ethical, respectful, and culturally responsive nursing practice.
  • Assists with laboratory preparation, simulation equipment, instructional materials, supply organization, and restoration of learning spaces when applicable.
