Research Scientist in Molecular Bacteriology- Department of Oral Medicine, Atrium Health-Wake Forest School of Medicine, Charlotte, NC USA
Position SummaryThe Research Scientist is responsible for conducting basic and translational research focused on
biomarker discovery for oral and systemic diseases. This role applies molecular microbiology,
molecular biology, cellular biology, and biochemistry methodologies to advance departmental research priorities. Working with a high degree of independence, the Research Scientist will lead all phases of the research process, including study design, laboratory implementation, data analysis, grant development, scientific dissemination, and mentorship of undergraduate and graduate trainees.
Key Responsibilities- Design and conduct basic and translational research studies, including protocol development, experimental design, laboratory implementation, and study oversight.
- Analyze and interpret research data using appropriate scientific and statistical methodologies to advance biomarker discovery and disease research.
- Prepare and submit grant applications, manuscripts, abstracts, and scientific presentations; present findings at professional meetings and conferences.
- Mentor undergraduate and graduate students while collaborating effectively with departmental research teams and leadership.
Education and Experience
- PhD, MD-PhD, DDS-PhD, or other doctoral degree in molecular microbiology or other biomedical science fields with emphasis on molecular bacteriology bench research background.
- Postdoctoral training in a reputable research laboratory utilizing contemporary biomedical research methodologies.
- Demonstrated record of peer-reviewed publications and experience conducting independent research.
- Experience in grant writing and submission, with demonstrated funding success preferred.
- Experience in basic and translational research related to oral medicine and oral-systemic health.
- Experience in biostatistics, bioinformatics, or clinical outcomes research.
- Demonstrated success obtaining external research funding.
- Experience working in academic, healthcare, or biomedical research environments.
- Ability to develop novel research concepts and independently implement them in laboratory research settings.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and scientific reasoning skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including scientific writing and presentation development.
- Demonstrated organizational, planning, time‑management, and teamwork skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
