Senior Research Specialist

The Senior Research Specialist will support the Meharry Center for Genome Research (MCGR) and Together for CHANGE (T4C) GREAT Health Study by performing hands-on processing of human biological specimens and ensuring accurate, compliant handling of all derived materials. Under minimal supervision, the individual will conduct experiments and assays, record and analyze results, and follow established protocols for macromolecular extractions, including DNA, RNA, plasma, and serum isolation from human biospecimens.

The role includes maintaining sample storage within biorepositories under subzero conditions and ensuring precise documentation of all human-derived specimens within a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). The individual will be responsible for compiling and communicating experimental results to the supervisor, in coordination and guidance from the lead scientist, contributing to overall data integrity and project workflow. Additional responsibilities include preparing and shipping DNA samples using standard carriers;

adhering strictly to institutional safety protocols, including the handling of chemicals, toxic materials, and carcinogens; performing basic laboratory calculations (e.g., percentage solutions and serial dilutions); preparing reagents; operating and maintaining laboratory equipment; managing inventory; and ensuring a clean, organized laboratory environment.

  • Perform wet-lab experiments for processing human blood, saliva, and buccal samples, including:
    • Lab Management
    • DNA extraction
    • RNA extraction
    • Plasma isolation
    • Serum isolation
  • Work closely with Project Leadership and the lead Scientist to uphold quality, safety, and workflow efficiency.
  • Prepare, label, and track all samples according to established protocols.
  • Store processed and unprocessed samples at appropriate subzero temperatures (e.g., −20°C, −80°C, liquid nitrogen) following institutional biosafety requirements and maintain a biorepository of all the human biospecimens.
  • Enter and maintain accurate sample metadata in the LIMS to ensure traceability and compliance.
  • Follow all institutional biosafety guidelines for handling human biological materials.
  • Maintain cleanliness, organization, and readiness of the sample processing workspace.
  • Communicate promptly with project leads regarding sample status, workflow needs, and any deviations or issues.
  • Support continuous improvement of sample handling workflows and documentation.
  • Management of Lab staff, general laboratory operations, including inventory management and supply ordering.
  • Prepare and operate laboratory equipment such as liquid handlers, pipette automation systems, spectrophotometers, barcode scanner systems linked to LIMS, and the King Fisher APEX-DX for automated DNA extraction.
  • Prepare reagents and clean laboratory equipment as needed, and other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
  • Prior experience working with human samples, or willingness to learn and work in a clinical research laboratory environment involving human specimens.
  • Familiarity with nucleic acid extraction techniques (manual or automated).
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy in record-keeping, and adherence to protocols.
  • Ability to work independently under minimal supervision and direction of the lead scientist and the principal investigator, while collaborating effectively with the project team, which involves clinical coordinators and other clinical staff.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality, safety, lab orders & supplies, and regulatory compliance.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Preferred
  • Experience with LIMS or digital sample-tracking systems is an advantage.
Education and Experience Required
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related field, with 3–5 years of basic science research laboratory experience.
  • At least 1-year of experience in biorepository and laboratory management.
Education and Experience Preferred
  • PhD in biological sciences or related fields.
  • Basic Science wet lab experience in molecular biology or a related field of research.
