Salary Range

USD 20 hourly

Position Details

Temporary (32 weeks) and part‑time (19 hours/week). Hours are flexible based on class or school schedule.

Who You Will Be Working With

The Water Quality Program is a group of about 30 staff passionate about protecting our streams and lakes in Mecklenburg County. Backgrounds span Environmental Science, Engineering, Biology and Natural Resources Management. The team conducts monitoring, inspections, enforces environmental regulations and provides education. Five sections exist:
Pollution Prevention, Pollution Control, Compliance, Streams & Lakes, and Biologicals.

More About the Role

This position is in the Pollution Prevention Section. The team educates residents, businesses, municipal employees and students, and promotes water‑quality volunteer programs that serve more than 5 000 residents annually.

What You Will Be Doing

Support volunteer programs by assisting volunteers and managing supplies and equipment; assist with public‑education presentations on water quality at schools, businesses and special events; and select your own project with another section of the Water Quality Program.

Position Summary

Perform work related to your college studies and career goals; complete assigned duties under the direction of a county professional staff member to gain career‑oriented knowledge and experience.

Essential Functions
  • Assist with community volunteer programs such as Adopt‑A‑Stream, Volunteer Monitoring, Storm Drain Marking and monthly volunteer events, including occasional work after normal business hours and on weekends.
  • Work on projects and tasks such as developing and maintaining spreadsheets, performing fieldwork, evaluating information and results, and collaborating across departments.
  • Assist staff in the assigned departments with ongoing research projects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience:

    No experience required.
  • Education:

    Must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate program at an accredited university or technical school in a field related to the assignment.
  • Computer

    Skills:

    Proficient in basic software such as Microsoft Office Suite.
Licenses and Certifications

North Carolina or South Carolina Driver’s License. Must be able to obtain and maintain a County Operator’s Permit.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Energetic passion for the environment, community service and volunteer programs.
  • Prior experience leading groups and working with volunteers.
  • Experience with public presentations is helpful.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of basic environmental science.
  • Knowledge of stormwater.
  • Knowledge of the Charlotte‑Mecklenburg Storm Water Services.
  • Using a computer and related software applications.
  • Demonstrating environmental concepts to children and adults.
  • Motivating and encouraging volunteers.
  • Conducting field observations.
  • Organizing and preparing reports.
  • Communication – Clearly convey information and ideas through a variety of media to individuals or groups, engaging the audience.
