Overview

The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) office promotes environmental, health, and safety compliance within the University of North Carolina at Charlotte campus community.

Primary Purpose

To administer and monitor the University’s environmental, health, and safety program; inspect facilities; enforce safety regulations; conduct investigations; and work with stakeholders to ensure campus safety.

Responsibilities
  • Assist with the development and implementation of campus environmental, health, and safety programs (Emergency Preparedness, Fire Prevention, Aerial Lifts, Forklifts, AEDs, Hot Work, Event Safety).
  • Administer and monitor Emergency Preparedness/Building Evacuation Plans, Fire Prevention, Aerial Lifts, Forklifts, AEDs, Hot Work, and Event Safety programs.
  • Maintain detailed records of inspections and incidents; conduct training sessions; review construction plans; provide occupancy and event safety consultations; inspect facilities; enforce safety regulations; conduct investigations and assessments.
  • Serve as the primary contact for the fire department and the State Fire Marshal.
  • Coordinate inspections of fire suppression systems (fire pumps, alarm systems, detectors, extinguishers, hydrants, standpipes, sprinkler systems) and oversee repairs.
  • Develop building evacuation plans and conduct fire drills.
  • Identify hazards and implement corrective actions.
  • Process and monitor hot‑work and event permits.
  • Inspect facilities, equipment, and employee work practices for conformance with regulatory standards.
  • Analyze program performance and implement continuous improvement strategies.
  • Build relationships and serve as a liaison with federal, state, and local authorities.
  • Deliver environmental, health, and safety training programs.
  • Provide consultative safety services and respond to requests and emergency incidents.
  • Write reports and communicate results effectively.
Required

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in fire science, fire protection management, fire prevention, occupational safety, industrial technology, or a related discipline from an accredited institution.
  • Equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • 1–3 years of environmental health, safety, or fire experience.
Preferred

Education and Experience
  • Degree in fire science, fire protection management, fire prevention, safety and health, engineering, risk management, or related technical/business fields.
  • Detailed knowledge of environmental health and safety regulations, building fire protection equipment, evacuation plans, evacuation drills, hot work, AEDs, and event safety.
  • Familiarity with NFPA, NCFC, etc.
  • Experience developing and delivering training programs.
  • Experience working in a university or public sector environment.
  • Sound judgment interpreting and applying policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Experience with fire protection equipment and new technology systems for inspections, training, or compliance tracking.
  • Knowledge of building equipment (fire sprinklers, hydrants, fire suppression, HVAC, electrical).
Certifications / Licenses
  • Valid driver’s license (required).
  • Preferred: NFPA Certified Fire Prevention Inspector, NFPA Certified Fire Protection Specialist, or similar.
