Job Overview

Location: 11926 Carolinas Medical Center - Public Safety

Position: Public Safety Officer

Schedule: Full‑time, 40 hours per week, rotating dayshift (6:00 AM – 6:00 PM). Sign‑on bonus eligible.

Pay Range: $21.85 – $32.80 per hour

Major Responsibilities
  • Provides security services with a customer‑service approach, focusing on professionalism, fairness, and compassion in all circumstances.
  • Projects a professional, approachable appearance, remains alert and ethical, and maintains the department uniform and equipment in good repair.
  • Conducts interior and exterior patrols, performs inspections for vulnerabilities, hazards, and fire conditions, audits Interim Life Safety measures, manages patient valuables, and conducts contraband searches.
  • Assists teammates, patients, and visitors by giving directions and physical assistance, ensuring traffic control, monitoring visitor conduct, and confronting unauthorized persons.
  • Prevents, responds to, and investigates workplace violence, including combative or threatening patients and visitors.
  • Acts as a primary resource for de‑escalation, using force only when necessary (e.g., conducted electrical weapon, handcuffing).
  • Plans, practices, and responds to emergencies such as lost or abducted infants/children, fires, and active threats.
  • Responds immediately to emergency and crisis situations and intervenes physically when training dictates.
  • Investigates incidents on Advocate Health property, completes accurate reports, and escalates complaints to appropriate leaders.
  • Performs liaison rounding duties to collaborate with all departments and units, delivering security awareness education to staff.
  • Liaises with federal, state, and local law enforcement; coordinates and briefs prisoners, patients, and guard personnel to ensure policy compliance.
  • Maintains current department training standards in radio communications, verbal de‑escalation, hemorrhage control, CPR, clinical restraints, and conducted energy weapon use.
  • Assists with exterior traffic and crowd control, including parking enforcement, valet assistance, and vehicular assistance.
Licensure, Registration, and Certification
  • Security Officer Healthcare Certification (CHSO) issued by the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) – must be obtained within two years of appointment.
  • Unarmed Guard License issued by NC Protective Services – for North Carolina employees, must be obtained within one year.
  • Stop the Bleed certification – must be obtained within one year of hire.
  • Valid driver’s license issued by the Division of Motor Vehicles.
  • Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) Card (Illinois) or Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW) license (Illinois).
  • Certified in conducted energy weapon use (e.g., TASER) within 90 days of hire and periodically thereafter.
Education
  • High school graduate or GED equivalency.
Experience
  • At least one year of experience in a security, public safety, or customer‑service role that includes responding to emergent situations and addressing potential risks.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Illinois employees must complete the State of Illinois 20‑hour Basic Security Officer course.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency using computers for documentation (Microsoft Word, Excel, web navigation, database entry).
  • Capability to defend self or others in physical confrontations when de‑escalation fails.
  • Effective radio and telephone communication at varying volumes.
Physical Requirements
  • Must sit, stand, walk, drive, and lift up to 35 lb. occasionally; push or pull with 35 lb. of force.
