Detention Officer

Responsibilities

• Supervise, transport, and secure inmates housed within the Halifax County Detention Facility.
• Admit and book inmates, prepare them for transport and court or medical facilities.
• Feed inmates and supervise all other inmate activity.
• Prepare computerized reports and logs.
• Conduct periodic searches and maintain overall security.
• Operate the computer management system and oversee control and surveillance centers within the facility.
• Provide counseling and advising to inmates as needed.
• Work under the policies and procedures of the North Carolina Department of Human Resources, the Training and Standards Council of the Department of Justice of North Carolina, and direct supervision of the assigned supervisor.
• Work 12‑hour rotating shifts, including holidays and weekends.

• High school graduation or GED.
• At least 21 years of age.
• Valid North Carolina driver’s license.
• United States citizen.
• Ability to obtain certification as a law enforcement officer in accordance with the North Carolina Sheriff’s Training and Standards Commission.

• Meet the minimum standards set forth by the NC Sheriff Training and Standards (12
  
  NCAC 10B.0301) and the Employment Disqualifier document.

Halifax County is a drug‑free workplace. A pre‑employment drug test will be required before the first day of employment.
