Police Sergeant

The Police Sergeant serves as a first-line shift supervisor, providing leadership and oversight to college police officers to ensure the safety and security of the college community. This position is responsible for supervising sworn law enforcement officers, coordinating shift operations and patrol activities to ensure the protection of life and property through the enforcement of federal, state, and local laws on college property.

The Sergeant exercises independent judgment within established policies and procedures and operates under the general supervision of the Police Lieutenant. The position supports a diverse, high-traffic campus environment and promotes community-oriented policing strategies through effective supervision and proactive policing.

1. Supervises and directs daily activities of assigned police officers, ensuring adherence to policies and procedures.

2. Conducts daily briefings, assigns duties, and monitors performance of assigned personnel.

3. Provides coaching, mentoring, performance feedback, and disciplinary action as necessary to maintain a professional, accountable work environment.

4. Acts as the on-scene supervisor during emergencies, coordinating responses and resources until relieved by higher authority.

5. Conducts regular patrols of campus grounds, buildings, and parking areas to maintain a visible police presence and deter criminal activity.

6. Responds to routine and emergency incidents, including disturbances, medical situations, and safety hazards.

7. Coordinates and leads incident responses, ensuring appropriate escalation, documentation, and communication with senior leadership.

8. Prepares, reviews, and maintains accurate reports, logs, and records of incidents, investigations, and shift activities.

9. Assists in developing and revising safety protocols, standard operating procedures, and campus security measures for events.

10. Supports Clery Act compliance by ensuring accurate reporting of incidents and crimes.

11. Assists in scheduling and coordinating police officer training requirements.

12. Conducts regular evaluations of police officer skills and recommends professional development opportunities.

13. Promotes a professional, customer-oriented environment when interacting with students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

14. Build relationships to foster trust, collaboration, and community policing principles.

15. Ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, as well as college policies.

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in law enforcement, with demonstrated leadership ability through progressive advancement.
• North Carolina Basic Law Enforcement Certification (NCBLET)
• Valid and current driver’s license required.

• Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration or related field.
• Prior experience in a college or university law enforcement setting.
• Familiarity with Clery Act reporting and campus safety procedures.
• Advanced certifications (e.g., field training officer, community policing).

• Comprehensive knowledge of North Carolina criminal, traffic, and juvenile laws.
• Ability to lead and motivate personnel in a diverse and dynamic campus environment.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to exercise sound judgment and decision-making in high-stress situations.
• Proficiency in law enforcement technology, records management systems, and reporting software.

• Work is performed in both office and field environments and may involve exposure to varying weather conditions and potentially hazardous situations.
• Ability to work rotating shifts and extended hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Primary place of duty is Central Campus; however, duties will also require routine travel to and performance of duties at suburban campuses as dictated by duty requirements.
• Physical ability to perform all essential functions of a sworn law enforcement officer, including standing, walking, lifting, using defensive tactics, and operating law enforcement vehicles and equipment.
• Availability to respond to emergencies and critical incidents outside of scheduled hours.
