Blythe Brothers Asphalt is currently looking for a Roadway Quality Control Technician to join our growing team.
The Roadway Quality Control Technician is responsible for monitoring all paving operations to ensure that the asphalt product being placed meets all contract specifications. The roadway quality technician must work and coordinate with paving personnel and project inspectors to ensure that contract specifications are being met. Once the paving work is completed, the roadway quality control technician obtains core sample specimens from the roadway and delivers them to the quality‑control laboratory for density testing.
Excellent record‑keeping skills and the ability to communicate effectively are a must. This position requires availability for day, night shifts and weekends; typical hours range from 40 to 70+ per week.
Skills And Abilities
Knowledge of proper use of equipment, hand and power tools, materials and supplies used in highway and heavy construction work in a safe manner to minimize the risk of injury, property damage or loss of life.
- Knowledge of first aid and applicable safety precautions.
- Ability to work independently and complete assigned tasks according to the work schedule.
- Ability and willingness to communicate, follow instructions and transmit written and oral instructions.
- Ability to meet attendance schedule with dependability and consistency.
- Ability to work well with others.
- Compliance with Blythe Brothers Asphalt LLC's policies and procedures, including those outlined in the Employee Handbook.
Regularly works near moving machinery/tools requiring good manual dexterity and multi‑limb coordination; must be able to move quickly and have excellent stamina.
Must be able to lift, push, pull or carry objects over 80 lbs., using legs, hips, shoulders, abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue. The technician will lift a core saw from a pickup truck bed and place it on the asphalt; the saw weighs approximately 80 lbs.
Must be able to stand and walk for long periods and climb a ladder; the candidate may stand on hot asphalt for extended periods.
Ability to perform free of drugs and alcohol, including prescription drugs that may hinder ability to perform essential functions.

Sensory DemandsPeriodic exposure to dangerous and/or toxic substances; must wear necessary personal protection to protect eyes, nose and skin.
Regular exposure to dust, dirt, vehicle exhaust, asphalt and noise.
Environmental ConditionsMust be able to work in all types of weather and prepare for extreme heat and cold. Typical temperatures range from 30 °F to 105 °F.
Other Position Related ItemsMust have a driving record that meets the company's requirements.
The candidate must provide a trustworthy pickup truck capable of hauling asphalt coring equipment. A monetary allowance for vehicle and gas card is provided.
The Roadway Technician will be expected to work mainly, but not limited to, the Charlotte Metro area of North Carolina.
Communication and Math SkillsGood math skills are required.
CertificationAbility to pass certification exams for a Roadway Quality Technician Certification in both NC and SC; training will be provided for the exams.
Tools and EquipmentAll required tools (excluding a pickup truck) are provided.
The position requires the candidate to provide sturdy boots and workwear to protect feet and extremities from the heat of asphalt.
