Summary

Join the award-winning Fleet Management Division of the City of Charlotte as an Associate Diesel Technician and become part of a team that keeps one of the region’s most advanced municipal fleets running strong. You’ll work alongside a dedicated group of ASE-certified Medium/Heavy Truck technicians, supporting essential services for both the City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County.

In this entry-level role, you’ll take the lead on the daily evaluation, inspection, diagnosis and repair of heavy trucks, sanitation equipment, and construction equipment. The Associate level technician is primarily responsible for lube oil and filter change, safety inspections, tires, North Carolina State Inspections, preventive maintenance services, hydraulic system repair, brake work, and maintenance and repair of various types of municipal equipment.

This is an entry level position and will include mentoring with a journey level technician for a period of time.

Major Duties And Responsibilities
  • Inspects, diagnoses, and performs general heavy truck repairs.
  • North Carolina State Inspections
  • Lube oil and filter service
  • Completes work orders using fleet maintenance software to document work performed.
  • Assist in determining functions, faults, and needed service or recommend repairs.
  • Interprets manuals, electrical diagrams and diagnostic software and translates findings to assist with the repair of equipment.
  • Understanding and following safety procedures is critical with the ability to assess potential safety hazards.
  • Maintains a safe/clean work environment.
  • Demonstrates the ability and knowledge to identify specific parts, operate tools and equipment needed to provide service.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of the methods, tools and materials used in diagnosis and maintenance of heavy trucks and other equipment.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade, and the ability to exercise adequate safety precautions against such hazards.
  • Desire to learn and expand knowledge of the heavy truck and equipment industry and Fleet Management.
  • Ability to effectively be part of a team.
  • Works in organized, clean and safe manner.
  • Analyze, evaluate, and effectively write diagnosis and recommendation of work being performed to complete work orders.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Must be able to pass background and motor vehicle license check.
  • Ability to work holidays, some weekends, and overtime.
  • Ability to travel out of town for training on occasion.
