Fabrication Laboratory Specialist

Position located in Storrs Building, UNC Charlotte Main Campus. This is a temporary – full time position supported by the College of Arts & Architecture.

• Provide technical instruction and certification in safe operation of woodworking, metalworking, CNC machining, robotic fabrication, laser cutting, and additive manufacturing equipment.
• Operate, configure, troubleshoot, and support advanced fabrication equipment including AXYZ 3‑axis CNC router, Laguna 3‑axis CNC router, KUKA KR60–HA industrial robotic arm, 3‑D potter large‑format clay printer, CO laser cutters, FDM 3‑D printers, and conventional woodworking and metalworking machinery.
• Assist students, faculty and researchers in selecting fabrication methods, materials, tooling, machine settings, work‑holding strategies and production workflows.
• Support CAD/CAM workflows and assist with digital file preparation, toolpath generation, machine setup and fabrication planning.
• Diagnose and resolve mechanical, software, tooling and operational issues affecting laboratory users.
• Perform preventive maintenance, calibration, routine service and minor repairs on fabrication equipment.
• Maintain maintenance records, inventory lists and coordinate major repairs with vendors and manufacturers.
• Assist with installation, commissioning, testing and implementation of new equipment, tooling and fabrication technologies.
• Support faculty research, sponsored research, design‑build projects, exhibitions and special fabrication projects.
• Maintain inventories of tools, replacement parts, consumables and safety supplies.
• Enforce laboratory safety policies, equipment operating procedures and school regulations.
• Monitor laboratory activities, identify operational or safety concerns and respond appropriately.
• Maintain records related to equipment maintenance, user certifications, inventories and operations.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

• Bachelor’s degree in architecture, industrial design, engineering technology, manufacturing technology, construction management, mechanical engineering technology or a closely related field; or equivalent combination of education and progressively responsible professional fabrication experience.
• Experience operating and maintaining fabrication equipment within an academic, research, manufacturing or professional fabrication environment.

• Master’s degree in architecture, industrial design, engineering technology, manufacturing technology or a related discipline.
• Two or more years of professional experience supporting fabrication laboratories, makerspaces, manufacturing facilities or industrial shops.
• Experience operating and maintaining industrial CNC equipment, laser cutters, industrial robotic systems and additive manufacturing technologies.
• Working knowledge of CAD/CAM software and digital fabrication workflows (Rhino, Grasshopper, RhinoCAM, VCarve Pro, Fusion 360 or comparable).
• Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor repairs on fabrication equipment.
• Ability to interpret architectural drawings, fabrication documentation, shop drawings and technical specifications.
• Experience delivering technical instruction and safety training to users of varying experience.
• Strong mechanical aptitude with analytical and problem‑solving skills.
• Excellent organizational, interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities while supporting instructional, research and operational activities.
