Transportation Worker II (S)
This posting is for a Transportation Worker II in the Mecklenburg Maintenance Unit. This role focuses on maintaining and repairing state maintained roads in Mecklenburg County. Daily work includes setting up work zones, installing traffic control devices, repairing asphalt, clearing debris, assisting with drainage and pipe installation, and operating equipment such as asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, backhoes, crack sealing machine, force feed loader, forklift, front end loader, motor grader, skid steer, sweeper, tandem dump truck and tractor excavator.
The job also involves manual labor, monitoring inmate work crews, and responding to emergencies like snow, ice, and downed trees. It requires working in difficult terrain and weather, lifting up to 50 lbs, and being available for nights, weekends, holidays, and is subject to emergency call backs. Safety toe shoes are required.
The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Class A Commercial Driver's License with N endorsement on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
Pre-employment drug testing required. As a condition of employment, a release form and a background statement must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.
Management prefers applicants with the following:
- Working knowledge of Work Zone Safety and Workplace safety policies
- Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures
- Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: asphalt patcher, backhoe, crack sealing machine, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, motor grader, skid steer, sweeper, tandem dump truck or track excavator
- Experience in snow and ice removal operations
- Experience in one of the following: pipe installation, installation of erosion control devices, snow and ice removal, ditch maintenance or asphalt patching
High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience
