Job Description
Position SummaryThe HVAC Service Technician is responsible for diagnosing, servicing, repairing, and installing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems for residential customers. This role includes performing preventative maintenance, system start-ups, equipment replacements, and ensuring all systems operate efficiently and safely.
Key ResponsibilitiesService & Repair
- Diagnose and troubleshoot HVAC system issues (furnaces, AC units, heat pumps, air handlers, etc.)
- Perform repairs on mechanical, electrical, and refrigeration components
- Inspect equipment to identify wear, damage, or potential failures
- Ensure proper system performance and customer comfort
Start-Ups & Commissioning
- Perform system start-ups on newly installed HVAC equipment
- Verify installation quality, airflow, refrigerant charge, and system operation
- Calibrate thermostats, controls, and system settings
- Document startup procedures and report any deficiencies
Replacements & Install Support
- Remove and replace HVAC equipment, including condensers, furnaces, air handlers, and duct components
- Assist with or independently perform equipment installations
- Ensure installations meet manufacturer specifications and local codes
- Test systems after replacement to confirm proper operation
Preventative Maintenance
- Conduct routine maintenance visits including cleaning, inspections, and tune-ups
- Replace filters, check electrical connections, lubricate moving parts, and test safety controls
- Recommend repairs or system upgrades when necessary
Customer Service
- Communicate clearly with customers about system issues, repair options, and costs
- Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor
- Provide recommendations for system efficiency and longevity
Documentation & Compliance
- Complete service reports, work orders, and maintenance logs accurately
- Follow all safety protocols and OSHA regulations
- Maintain EPA compliance for refrigerant handling
- High school diploma or equivalent (technical/trade school preferred)
- 2+ years of HVAC service experience (or entry-level with training)
- EPA Certification (required)
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
- Strong understanding of HVAC systems, tools, and diagnostics
- Troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Ability to read schematics and technical manuals
- Strong mechanical aptitude
- Good communication and customer service skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Physical ability to lift heavy equipment and work in confined spaces
- Work performed in residential and outdoor environments
- Exposure to varying temperatures and weather conditions
- May require on-call, overtime, and weekend work
- Experience with smart HVAC systems or advanced controls
- Experience with residential
