Petroleum Construction Lead
The Petroleum Construction Lead is responsible for leading and performing petroleum construction activities associated with the installation, replacement, and modification of underground storage tanks (USTs), above ground storage tanks (ASTs), fuel piping systems, and related petroleum equipment.
This is a hands-on field leadership position. The successful candidate will have strong experience in petroleum construction, the ability to read and interpret construction plans, understand elevations and grades, and effectively lead field crews to complete projects safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications.
The position requires frequent travel and overnight/out-of-town work.
Key Responsibilities- Lead and perform the installation of USTs, ASTs, fuel piping, and associated petroleum equipment.
- Supervise and direct field crews during petroleum construction activities.
- Read and interpret construction drawings, plans, specifications, and details.
- Understand and verify elevations, grades, slopes, tank elevations, piping grades, and site layouts.
- Coordinate daily construction activities with project managers, general contractors, subcontractors, inspectors, and other trades.
- Ensure work is performed according to approved plans, specifications, manufacturer requirements, and company standards.
- Perform excavation, tank setting, piping installation, back filling, concrete preparation, and other petroleum construction activities.
- Install and work with fiberglass, double-wall, and flexible fuel piping systems.
- Assist with the installation of tank sumps, spill containment, drop tubes, vent piping, dispenser equipment, and related petroleum components.
- Operate and work around construction equipment and tools as required.
- Identify field conditions that may impact the project and communicate issues to the Project Manager.
- Verify that materials and equipment are available and properly installed before proceeding with work.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe jobsite.
- Complete required daily documentation, including quantities, progress, material usage, and jobsite conditions.
- Ensure all work is performed in compliance with OSHA requirements and company safety policies.
- Stop work and immediately report unsafe conditions or activities when necessary.
- Assist with troubleshooting and resolving field installation issues.
- Train and mentor less-experienced technicians and crew members.
- Represent the company professionally when interacting with customers, general contractors, inspectors, and other project stakeholders.
- Travel to project locations throughout the assigned region and other areas as required.
- 5+ years of experience in petroleum construction, fuel system installation, or a closely related field.
- Demonstrated experience installing both USTs and ASTs.
- Strong experience installing and working with petroleum piping systems.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, civil drawings, site plans, and equipment details.
- Strong understanding of elevations, grades, slopes, and piping elevations.
- Ability to understand project layouts and translate plans into field installation.
- Previous experience leading or supervising construction crews.
- Ability to operate or work around excavation and construction equipment.
- Strong knowledge of safe work practices and construction site safety.
- Valid driver's license with a good driving record.
- Ability to travel regularly and work overnight/out of town as required.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and perform physically demanding construction work.
- Petroleum industry certifications or manufacturer training.
- Experience with fuel piping systems such as OPW Flex Works, UPP, NUPI or similar systems.
- Experience with Xerxes, Containment Solutions, or other UST/AST manufacturers.
- Experience with petroleum dispensers, tank sumps, spill containment, vent systems, and drop systems.
- Experience working on retail fueling facilities, convenience stores, fleet fueling facilities, or similar petroleum projects.
- Previous experience working with general contractors and commercial construction projects.
- OSHA or other applicable safety certifications.
- Strong field leadership and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and make sound decisions in the field.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Ability to identify problems before they become costly issues.
- Ability to read plans and understand how the work should be laid out in the field.
- Dependable and willing to travel.
- Professional attitude when working with customers, contractors, and coworkers.
- Ability to effectively manage changing field conditions and project priorities.
- Safety-minded with a commitment to doing the job correctly and safely.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull construction materials and equipment.
