Software Application Engineer

API Platform – BILD (Bank, Invest, Lend & Digital) Overview

We are seeking a Mid‑Level API Engineer to join Ally Financials’ API Platform Team within the BILD organization. This team builds, modernizes, and supports high‑volume, mission‑critical APIs that power Ally’s money movement, authentication, and account services—supporting $37B+ in annual transactions used daily by customers.

In this role, you will design, build, and enhance backend APIs in a cloud‑native AWS environment, contribute to API gateway integrations (Kong), and help modernize legacy services as Ally continues its transition to a fully cloud‑driven architecture. You’ll work closely with product, platform, and engineering teams in a highly collaborative Agile environment.

This position is ideal for an engineer who can independently own features with some guidance, understands how systems behave in production, and enjoys working across a modern, distributed API ecosystem.

• Design, develop, and maintain RESTful APIs supporting money movement, authentication, and customer data services
• Build new APIs from scratch while also enhancing and supporting existing services (bug fixes, performance improvements, new features)
• Contribute to API gateway integrations and proxy configurations using Kong (experience with Apigee a plus)
• Develop and deploy serverless solutions on AWS, leveraging services such as Lambda, S3, Dynamo
  
  DB, SQS, and Cloud Watch
• Support infrastructure automation using Terraform or other Infrastructure‑as‑Code tools
• Collaborate closely with product managers, platform teams, and other engineers to deliver scalable, secure solutions
• Monitor APIs in production, participate in incident triage, and apply an application‑architecture mindset to system behavior and performance
• Assist with modernization efforts, including supporting legacy Java/Spring Boot services during cloud transition
• Participate in Agile ceremonies and contribute to continuous improvement across CI/CD pipelines and development practices

• 3–5 years of experience building backend or API‑driven applications
• Strong experience with Node.js, Type Script, or Python for API development
• Hands‑on experience building and consuming RESTful APIs
• Working knowledge of AWS cloud services, particularly in a serverless or event‑driven architecture
• Experience supporting applications in production environments, including monitoring and troubleshooting
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, Git‑based version control, and Agile development practices
• Ability to collaborate effectively across engineering and product teams

• Experience with API management platforms such as Kong or Apigee
