Senior API Engineer

Charlotte, NC (Hybrid – 3 days onsite / 2 days remote)

$70-75/hr

Brooksource is hiring a Senior API Engineer to support a large financial services organization’s API Platform team. This team builds, modernizes, and operates high-volume, mission‑critical APIs that power consumer‑facing money movement and account services, supporting tens of billions of transactions annually.

In this role, you will take end‑to‑end ownership of API services, lead greenfield development, and help reimagine core payment and transfer capabilities from the ground up. You’ll partner closely with product, platform, and full‑stack engineering teams to design scalable, observable, and resilient systems in a modern, cloud‑native AWS environment.

This opportunity is ideal for a senior engineer who can hit the ground running, independently drive bodies of work, understand production system behavior, and contribute to architectural decisions in a highly collaborative environment.

• Design, develop, and own RESTful APIs supporting high‑scale, transactional financial services
• Lead greenfield API development while modernizing and enhancing existing platforms
• Apply a system‑level and application‑architecture mindset to design, scalability, and reliability
• Build and deploy serverless, event‑driven solutions on AWS (Lambda, S3, Dynamo
  
  DB, SQS, ECS, Cloud Watch)
• Contribute to API gateway integrations and platform work (Kong experience preferred; Apigee exposure a plus)
• Participate in and influence architecture discussions, design reviews, and technical decision‑making
• Monitor, troubleshoot, and triage production issues using modern observability and monitoring tools
• Collaborate closely with product managers, platform teams, and full‑stack engineers
• Support and modernize legacy services (Java/Spring, Apache Camel, limited SOAP integrations)
• Contribute to CI/CD pipelines, deployment strategies (blue/green, multi‑region), and infrastructure automation

• 6+ years of experience building backend or API‑driven applications
• Strong experience designing and building APIs from scratch in high‑volume, transactional environments
• Proficiency with Type Script and Node.js (Python and Java/Spring familiarity for legacy support)
• Hands‑on experience with AWS in serverless and event‑driven architectures
• Proven experience owning production systems, including monitoring, troubleshooting, and incident response
• Strong understanding of RESTful API design and distributed system patterns
• Ability to work autonomously and take ownership of large bodies of work
• Strong collaboration and communication skills in cross‑functional environments

• Experience with financial services, payments, or money‑movement platforms (transfers, P2P, bill pay)
• Experience with API management platforms such as Kong or Apigee
• Infrastructure as Code experience (Terraform)
• Experience with multi‑region deployments and blue/green release strategies
• Familiarity with Apache Camel, SOAP integrations, or hybrid REST/SOAP environments
• AWS Certification (Solutions Architect – Associate or higher)
