Staff Software Engineer – IE07IE
We’re determined to make a difference and are proud to be an insurance company that goes well beyond coverages and policies. The Claims IT department is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to design, build and scale next‑generation claims technology solutions. This is a hands‑on technical leadership role where you will drive architecture decisions, mentor engineers, and deliver high‑impact software that transforms the claims experience for customers and internal users.
The role will have a hybrid work schedule, with the expectation of working in an office location (Hartford, CT; Columbus, OH; or Charlotte, NC) 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).
- Lead the design and development of scalable, cloud‑native applications and microservices on AWS to support claims processing platforms.
- Architect and implement Generative AI and Agentic AI solutions, including LLM integration, prompt engineering, AI orchestration pipelines, retrieval‑augmented generation (RAG), and autonomous agent workflows.
- Serve as a hands‑on technical leader – writing production code, conducting code reviews, and setting engineering standards for the team.
- Collaborate with product owners, architects, data scientists, and business stakeholders to translate complex business requirements into robust technical solutions.
- Mentor and coach junior and mid‑level engineers, fostering a culture of engineering excellence, continuous learning, and innovation.
- Drive adoption of Dev Ops best practices including CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code (Terraform), automated testing, and observability.
- Evaluate and recommend new technologies, frameworks, and patterns to improve developer productivity, system reliability, and customer outcomes.
- Contribute to the evolution of our claims platform architecture, ensuring solutions are secure, performant, and maintainable at enterprise scale.
- Partner with cross‑functional teams across Claims IT to ensure consistency in standards, patterns, and tooling.
- Candidates must be authorized to work in the US without company sponsorship.
- 6+ years of professional software engineering experience delivering complex, enterprise‑scale applications.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
- Hands‑on experience with Generative AI and Agentic AI technologies—including working with LLMs, AI agents, prompt engineering, vector databases, RAG architectures, and AI orchestration frameworks (e.g., Lang Chain, Lang Graph, CrewAI, Auto Gen, or similar).
- Strong proficiency in Python and/or Java, with demonstrated ability to build production‑grade backend services and APIs.
- Extensive experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS), including but not limited to Lambda, DynamoDB, S3, SQS/SNS, API Gateway, ALB, Step Functions, and IAM.
- Experience building modern front‑end applications using Angular.
- Solid understanding of RESTful API design, microservices architecture, and event‑driven systems.
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code using Terraform.
- Proficiency with CI/CD tools and practices (Jenkins, Git Hub Actions, or similar).
- Strong understanding of software engineering fundamentals: design patterns, data structures, algorithms, testing strategies, and secure coding practices.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills with the ability to influence technical direction across teams.
- Experience with Guidewire Claim Center or other Guidewire products is a significant plus.
- Experience with FastAPI, Flask, or Spring Boot for building backend services.
- Familiarity with containerization (Docker) and orchestration (ECS/EKS).
- Experience with serverless architectures and event‑driven design patterns (e.g., AWS Lambda + SQS/SNS + DynamoDB Streams).
- Knowledge of observability and monitoring tools (Cloud Watch, Datadog, Splunk, or similar).
- AWS certifications (Solutions Architect, Developer, or Machine Learning Specialty).
- Experience with testing frameworks such as pytest, JUnit, Karate, or similar.
- Prior experience in the insurance or financial services industry.
- Familiarity with Agile/SAFe methodologies and working in a scaled Agile environment.
The annualized base pay range for this role is: $116,000 - $174,000.
