As a Staff Engineer at Bankrate, you sit at the intersection of deep technical expertise and strategic business thinking — the rare engineer who can see both the forest and the trees. You'll architect solutions to complex, cross-team challenges, ensuring every technology decision directly advances Bankrate's goals. That means influencing architectural direction, mentoring engineers, and spotting where emerging technology can unlock growth, efficiency, or a better customer experience — all while keeping systems scalable, secure, and cost-effective.
If you're energized by solving hard problems that matter beyond your immediate team, this role is built for you.
What You'll Do:

- Act as a trusted technical consultant and architect for multiple teams within an industry group.
- Partner with product and business stakeholders to align technical direction with measurable outcomes and company goals.
- Explore and evaluate emerging technologies, identifying opportunities to leverage new tools, frameworks, or paradigms that create business value.
- Lead technical design, planning, and execution for large-scale initiatives that span multiple systems in their product domains.
- Assess and execute trade-off decisions between performance, scalability, maintainability, and cost.
- Define and deliver technical stories that improve the integrity, performance, and long-term sustainability of shared systems.
- Conduct architectural reviews with the broader Staff group and proactively identify areas for simplification, modernization, and risk reduction.
- Mentor and develop engineers through design reviews, pair programming, and technical coaching.
- Champion consistency in design patterns, operational excellence, and engineering best practices across teams.
- Contribute to a culture of continuous learning and innovation — modeling curiosity, experimentation, and collaboration.
What We're Looking For:
- Demonstrated advanced expertise in multiple software engineering disciplines and ability to apply that expertise to solve complex, cross-domain problems.
- Proven record of architecting and delivering scalable, resilient systems that align with long-term business and product strategy.
- Strong systems thinking - able to connect architectural decisions to operational, security, and organizational outcomes.
- Exceptional communication skills with the ability to simplify complex ideas, influence decisions, and align diverse stakeholders.
- Deep understanding of software architecture principles, modern cloud infrastructure, and secure design practices.
- Demonstrated curiosity and commitment to continuous learning - proactive exploration of emerging technologies and assessing their business relevance.
- Skilled at mentoring and elevating engineering talent through constructive feedback, design guidance, pair programming, and modeling technical excellence.
- Balances technical rigor with pragmatic judgment, ensuring solutions are both robust and cost-effective.
- Operates with autonomy and accountability, influencing technical direction across multiple teams and driving alignment toward shared outcomes.
