Business Tax Auditor performs responsible work receiving, processing, and auditing business licenses, business personal property, meals, transient occupancy, and other related business tax documents and applications. Work is performed under limited supervision and reports to the Business Tax Supervisor.
The preferred hiring amount for this position is between $28.22 - $31.29 an hour ($58,697.60 - $65,083.20 annually). - The City of Charlottesville manages its own retirement system and does not participate in VRS; however, the City has a Portability Agreement with VRS and there are certain provisions that must be met. Responsibilities- Provides customer service to business owners regarding business taxes such as personal property, meals, transient occupancy, other related business taxes and the business license programs, in person, by telephone and by written correspondence.
- Receives and processes business license documents and applications; and business personal property returns, in addition to other related tax documents.
- Interviews/meets with the public and obtains, researches, and verifies necessary information in order to make business personal property tax assessments.
- Plans and conducts desk and field audits of city businesses to determine appropriate tax base for assessment purposes.
- Conducts routine research and investigations of businesses (new and existing) to determine taxability and/or appropriate classification.
- Examines and investigates tax returns and applications to ensure compliance with city ordinances and state laws; requiring ability to interpret and apply local and state law, case rulings, and opinions - which includes responding to appeals of assessment.
- Resolves problems or questions from customers relating to business license, business personal property, and excise taxes; including payments, billing, and delinquent accounts.
- Cross references data from a variety of sources to ensure taxpayer accounts are up‑to‑date and accurate.
- Enters and retrieves data with accuracy from a variety of databases and systems.
- Assists with bulk mailings of information to citizens.
- Assists with general office and administrative duties.
- Responsible for appropriate use and maintenance of City equipment, tools and other resources, including work time.
- Regular and reliable attendance.
