Job Description
Our client is seeking a Fund Accountant to join its growing finance and accounting team in Charlottesville, Virginia. This individual will take ownership of key accounting and operational activities supporting investment vehicles, with exposure to the full lifecycle of fund accounting, investment activity, valuations, financial reporting, and investor capital activity. This is a strong opportunity for an accounting or financial services professional who wants to deepen their experience in investment and fund accounting while working in a collaborative, analytical environment.
The ideal candidate has a strong accounting foundation, excellent attention to detail, sound judgment, and the ability to independently research and resolve discrepancies. This person should also be interested in using technology, automation, and emerging tools to improve accounting processes and efficiency.
- Support monthly, quarterly, and annual closing processes for investment vehicles
- Prepare, review, and post investment transactions
- Perform account and investment reconciliations and research discrepancies
- Review investment values and investigate unusual activity or variances
- Coordinate and process capital activity, including capital calls and distributions
- Maintain accurate accounting work papers, documentation, and supporting records
- Assist with financial reporting, audits, and other accounting requirements
- Support cash management and treasury-related activities as needed
- Work closely with third-party service providers to research and resolve accounting and reconciliation matters
- Communicate with investment managers and other external partners to obtain information and support accounting and closing processes
- Help ensure investment activity is accurately reflected within accounting records and systems
- Develop a strong understanding of existing accounting processes, systems, and controls
- Identify opportunities to improve accuracy, efficiency, and recurring workflows
- Leverage technology, automation, and AI-enabled tools to improve accounting processes and analysis
- Participate in system enhancements and other finance and accounting initiatives
- 13+ years of professional accounting experience, preferably within public accounting, investment management, fund accounting, financial services, or another complex accounting environment
- Investment fund accounting or investment operations experience is strongly preferred
- Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- CPA or progress toward CPA designation is a plus
- Solid understanding of accounting principles
- Experience researching and resolving transactions, reconciliations, and accounting discrepancies
- Advanced Excel skills and comfort working with accounting systems and complex financial data
- Experience with double-entry accounting systems preferred
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills
- High attention to detail and ability to manage multiple deadlines
- Interest in investment structures, fund accounting, technology, automation, and emerging tools
